The Watch List: Keeping Pace

The Montreal Alouettes look to stay within reach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers atop the East Division as The Blue and Gold beat the Ti-Cats last night. The Als are in Calgary today for a big battle after the bye week. Here's what to watch.

-Perry Floyd will be making his Montreal debut at the KR postition as Tim Maypray is still recovering from his ankle injury. I'm sure Coach Trestman will have ashort lease when it comes to fumbles. If it becomes an issue look for Brian Bratton and brandon Whitaker to start receiving kicks.

-Diamond Ferri's agressiveness will be missed, but Greg Laybourn enthusiam should be able to fill the void as he'll make his Als debut at Linebacker.

-Jermaine McElveen is still not ready to go with his knee but JP Bekasiak is healthy and another canadian returns to the line-up. The pass attack will be lead by Moton Hopkins and John Bowman as they are thriving to get to Henry Burris.

-Ont the road it'll be vital to get Whitaker his touches early so that the Stampeders blitzes will have to watch #2 throughout the game.

-That Blitz will want to occupy Whitaker in blocking and not allow him to get into the flats for a pass reception. Whitaker has become Calvillo's safety.

-Calvillo had 10 TD passes in the first 3 weeks, he only has 4 in his last 4 weeks.

-The Als DB's will be tested on their tackling ability today, especially with Nik Lewis. He's tough and strong and hard to bring down.

-it'll be warm and pretty much no wind in calgary look for points to be put up on the board.

As for predictions, I'll go with the hometown cowboys in the Stamps as they have already lost 2 at McMahon Stadium. But I expect close and fun ballgame with the over 42-38 Calgary.

Post game Alservations: Deeing it Up

The Montreal Alouettes relied on the defensive side of the ball in their 27-4 victory past the Edmonton Eskimoes. Here are this week's Alservations...

- Chip Cox may still be behind some other contenders but is making his claim as one of the top defensive players in the game. He had 4 tackles, 2 sack and a pair of forced fumbles.

- Moton Hopkins making his Als debut sacked Ricky Ray a pair of times himself, The Als in all had 6 sacks... None by John Bowman.

- The Als Dominance in run defence continued as the Esks had 7 carries for minus 1 yard. Jerome Messum was a non-factor on the ground.

- Speaking of the ground, not only did the Als Sack Ray 6 times, they hit him 10 more times.

- Another Milestone or two for AC. Calvillo now has 400 career touchdown passes and over 70 000 passing.

- The pass protection on AC wasn't as strong as Coach Trestman would like. he was sacked 3 times and was rushed out of the pocket more than he normally is.

- Calvillo still has never thrown for 3 TDs in 18 head to head match-ups with Ricky Ray. He had two tosses both to Jamel Richardson.

- Ramon Guzman's hit on Jerome Messum will make the plays of the year.

-Kicking wise Sean Whyte has hit 19 straight FGs on the season with 4 in the game, But he punted and kicked off better than he has all season long. Maybe he was trying to prove something to Damon Duval making his return to Montreal.

-Tim Maypray tweeted this morning that he only has an ankle sprain and nothing will keep him down. he was finally able to break a big run on Duval's MFG.

- Scott Flory said he may wrestle a Bear or "A Coyot" on his Bye Week

The Als don't play until August 27th in Calgary as they will get a coming days off. We'll break down the first unofficial half of the season this coming Tuesday on The Als This Week on The TEAM 990 www.team990.com at 7pm eastern.

The Watch List: Marquee Match-Up

The Alouettes return home to face top team in the west the Edmonton Eskimoes. Here is what to watch in tonights game.

-RB Jerome Messum should see a lot carries early on, Kavis Reed will want the Als to concentrate on the run game to give Ricky Ray more time in the pocket later in the game.

-To counter the Als injuries on the Defensive Line (McElveen and Bekasiak), look for Ferri and Emry to get more blitzes than normal.

-John Bowman had 4 sacks in his first 3 games, none in the last 3 weeks. He is too good not to hit Ray at least once tonight.

-Look for shorter and quicker passes form Ray throughout the game as Fred Stamps and Adarius Bowman will not play. Marcus Henry will see more balls. Take the over of 6 balls to Jason Barnes at slotback.

-For the Als, success goes through Brandon Whitaker, he’ll need to catch 3-5 balls to go with over ten carries for an Alouette win.

-Anthony Calvillo only has 2 TD passes in his last 3 games. He’ll have at least 2 tonight.

-If Damon Duval misses just 1 FG, he will hear it from the Alouette faithful.

Here are some interesting numbers heading into tonights game, The Eskimoes have lost their last 3 games at Percival Molson Stadium. The average margin of victory for Montreal has been 29 points. Montreal also holds a 10 point playoff win over Edmonton at the Olympic Stadium in 2008.

The spread is 6 and a half, so it is tempting to take the Alouettes by a TD. But I like the way that Kavis Reed has his team thinking let alone playing. In an exciting tight game I’ll take the Alouettes by a late Sean Whyte FG 38-36.

The Montreal Alouettes head into Hamilton to face Avon Cobourne for the first time. Cobourne will want to impress his former mates as the Tiger-Cats look for their 3rd win in a row.
Montreal will have their own AC in the line-up, as Calvillo is good to go after leaving last week with blurred vision.
Sorry for no Watch List last week, but alas it is back for week 5

-Look for AC to find Kerry Watkins within his first 3 throws.

-Brandon Whitaker will be used more this week, as he was stuck in the backfield helping Jeraill McCuller block for the most part last week against Saskatchewan.

-Brandon London may see less balls thrown his way but he still remains a threat downfield. So look for any throws his way 20plus yards.

-Avon Cobourne will at some point in this game will be jawing with Shea Emry

-Kevin Glenn will look to go deep down the middle with Jeff Hecht starting at Safety in place of Etienne Boulay. Marcel Bellefeuille will be testing him early.

-Dwight Anderson and Billy Parker will have their hands full with rookie WR Chris Williams he has looked great in the 1st few weeks.

Prediction time, The Alouettes dont lose twice in a row that often. It is on the road so I expect this to stay close. Big games from Calvillo and Whitaker will carry the team. Montreal 30, Hamilton 28.

Post- Game Alservations: Put it in the Record books

Well it was going to happen for Anthony Calvillo sooner or later, he just decided on sooner. AC hit Eric Deslauriers in the 1st quarter to break the CFL's all-time TD mark as the Als trumped the Argos 40-17.

-This game wasn't all AC, RB Brandon Whitaker played a huge role with 27 touches and 214 total yards. The fact that Whitaker caught 11 passes means that the Argos DBs were doing their job.

-It did seem however, that Jim Barker did not implement a game plan for the one they call B-Whit. He showed a tremondous ammount of vision on numerous run plays finding not one or two holes but sometimes three.

-Back to AC, he's thrown 2 INTs this year, both started in the hands of his own receiver (Jamel Richardson and Eric Deslauriers).

-Chip Cox set a CFL record of his own with his 108 Fumble return. The previous mark was that of Ottawa Roughrider Al Washington in 1984 of 104 yards.

-Including special teams Chip Cox played 69 plays total in this game, He also had a pic and 7 tackles.

-Chad Kackert was washing dishes before the game and forgot to dry off his hands before playing, 2 fumbles at critical points in the game.

-Decent night for the Alouettes D line, 4, hurries, 4 hits and 2 sacks on Cleo Lemon.

-It was OL Scott Flory's 35th birthday, He was forced to play tackle when Josh Bourke got hurt. He hasn't done so since 2005. He prefers Guard as he was called for a holding penalty in the tackle position.

-Great to see Brandon London improve his game for the 3rd straight game. game 1: 1 reception, game 2: 3 receptions and game 3: 6 receptions. Anthony Calvillo is developing confidence with the wideout.

-What would have happened if Jamel Richardson and Kerry Watkins were in the line-up?

-It was a nice ceremony for Ben Cahoon, it is always great to see him in Montreal. But I have always believed if its a no-brainer to retire an athletes number, then there is no reason to wait. Just do it right away.

The Alouettes now have a long week of rest a recuperation as the host Saskatechewan next next Saunday evening a Percival Molson Stadium.

The Watch List- Keeping an Eye on History

The Montreal Alouettes host the Toronto Argonauts in an east division battle. With a Win the Als will be all alone in top spot as an Argos win would create a three-way tie with Winnipeg. Here's what to look for tonight.

- It's all about the Alouettes first series as Anthony Calvillo will break the tie with Damon Allen for top spot on the CFL all-time TD passing list. AC and Trestman would love to get it over with so they could just concentrate on football.

- If the Als aim for the endzone early on a bomb, look for SJ Green or Brandon London to be on the other end of it.

- If the Als march up the field and get into the Redzone, look for either Brandon Whitaker or Brian Bratton to notch the historic TD much like their last week TD receptions.

- #80 Eric Deslauriers will get his first start of the Season with the offense, He better catch the first few to him, or AC may never look at him for the rest of the game.

- The Alouettes Special teams coverage which has been an issue this year will have their hands full with former WR/KR Chad Owens. He may score the Only TD for the Boatmen.

- Look for Montreal's front four to concentrate a little more on Cleo Lemon than Chad Kackert. With no Cory Boyd it frees up for more pass rushing plays other then playing run defense against one of the leagues best.

- Don't Miss Ben Cahoon being honored at halftime, he deserves your attention, even though he doesn't want it.

-It's week 3, Dwight Anderson, Billy Parker or Mark Estelle would like to nab the Alouettes 1st INT of the season. It'll happen, give me Parker.

Prediction time: if you know me, You know I will not go against the Alouettes at home with Anthony Calvillo at the helm. I do not like the Argos Chances without Cory Boyd, their one true offensive star. The Argos defense will focus on Ac as he is missing some receivers. But I expect 5 plus receptions from Bratton, Green, Whitaker and London. Montreal 35, Toronto 15.

Post- Game Alservations: AC tops Darian and Damon

The Montreal Alouettes went into Mosaic Stadium and put the hammer down with a 39-25 road victory over the Roughriders. Here’s this week Alservations:

-Anthony Calvillo throws for 5 TDs for only (yup only) the 3rd time in his career. He ties Damon Allen for the most TD passes in CFL history with 394. Maybe he’ll hit number 400 next week.

-Great game for WR Brian Bratton, the 5 receptions, 76 yards and 2 TDs doesn’t tell the whole story. His key catch set-up Whitaker’s TD and he laid out a great WR block as S Green scored. Plus on more than one occasion Bratton was pass protecting for AC.

-Very rough game for some of the Alouette stars on Saturday. On separate occasions, Jamel Richardson, Mark Estelle, John Bowman, Brandon Whitaker and SJ Green all had to be tended to and helped off the field. Whitaker did not return and according to HerbZ of Alsinsideout has a concussion but hasn’t been ruled out for Friday at home against Toronto.

-But it was great to see Whitaker on the sidelines late in the fourth signally in plays to Dahrren Diedrick.

-Loved Dwight Anderson’s aggressiveness and ability to close the gap on Dressler on numerous occasions.

-Ever wonder why Chip Cox plays special teams when he’s an all-star on defence. Well watching him chase down returner Tristan Jackson, should answer that.

-All the pushing a shoving after the whistles makes me want to skip week three against Toronto and to invite Saskatchewan to town now. The Riders are easily the Als best rivalry in the west.

-After the game Darian Durant said he sees Anthony Calvillo as the greatest QB ever in the CFL. He only ever ‘heard’ of Doug Flutie.

-Speaking of Durant, I thought he looked a lot better than last week. He didn’t turn over the ball and put together a couple of very nice looking drives. He just doesn’t have the arsenal of receivers that he had to play with last season.

-The Riders Coaching staff did not get Wes Cates the ball enough he only had 9 touches overall in the game

-All three of Brandon London’s catches were for first downs

-With 419 passing yards, AC is now only 3490 yards away from passing Allen on the All-time passing yards list.

Rematch Watch List

Week two for the Alouettes is an afternoon Grey Cup rematch with the Saskatechwan Roughriders. As per usual there is alot to focus on.

-Marc Trestman is 6-2 against The Riders with Ken Miller as Head Coach, letès see how Greg Marshall prepares for the Alouettes.

-The Riders DBs had a tough time with Eskimoe tall WRs Bowman and Barnes in week one. It only gets tougher with Jamel Richardson and SJ Green

-The Riders gave up 42 points and 294 yards in the air as the could get any sustained pressure on Ricky Ray. Anthony Calvillo doesn't need time but if you give it to him then he'll rip the DBs apart.

-Wes Cates will be tough to defend and should get upwards of 20 touches between receiving and running. The Riders don't have the depth at WR like they have seen in years past.

-De'Audra Dix returns to the Als as a starter, how long will it last? if there are any more injuries on to the DBs they'll really have to search for replacements.

-Can Brandon Whitaker bring his A game on the road. The Als only have 1 win in 3 years when visiting Regina.

Prediction time.
I like the Als, pretty much on the basis of how the Riders played against Edmonton last week. If I didn't watch the game I'd probably pick Saskatechwan at home as they have not lost more than 3 games at Mosiac Staidium in any of their last 5 seasons.
The Als DBs will be tested and I'd probably go with the over.

The Alouettes season is one game deep, and they are on the road to BC with the 30-26 win over the Lions. Here are tonight's Alservations.

-NorthEast stands empty. 2011 is Sell out streak over 22 317 fans. How much did ticket prices go up... Not the number Ray Lalonde wanted to start his tenure with

-First series first touchdown SJ Green lines up outside, Ben Cahoon never did that 51yards

-Jeff Hecht gets thrown into the fire with the Brown injury, Billy Parker moves back to DHB.

-Chip Cox may be a linebacker but he still has DB speed, but after a drop of a sure pic in the 3rd quarter he’s probably better off where he is playing.

-Huge block by Jeff Hecht on Lions OL John Hameister-Ries on the Missed Field goal return by Tim Maypray, You’ll see it in the highlight packages for a bit.

-Jamel Richardson is ready to make his mark on the CFL in 2011, TDs of 40 and 46 yards, one displaying his speed, the other showing off his strength. He finished with 9 rec and 162 yards.

-Rough game for OL Jeff Perrett, gave up a sack and a holding call

-Special teams coverage still needs to be addressed, lanes were open right up the middle on the Tim Brown return

-The Alouettes lost a little luster when they turned to the run game in the 3rd quarter, its not like it didn’t work, but it couldn’t counter the Lions quick pace because ethey were down by so much.

-Travis Lulay took awhile to get going, but he can put a nice drive together in a time of need. He does run when he is in trouble, good thing he’s young.

-Nice to see the Alouettes hang Jerald Brown’s #39 jersey hang in the middle of the locker room after the game, Trestman says he’ll have surgery tomorrow and is likely done for the year

The Watch List: BC vs Montreal

Game one is finally here and finally there will be real football to talk about. Time to look forward and focus on the in-game play.

The Watch-List is a series of pre-game notes for the upcoming game. A football game is a wonderfully complicated game and certain games there will be things that I will be looking at/for throughout the game at hand

Montreal vs BC
Campbell’s Watch list:

-Brandon Whitaker’s pass protection, I don’t expect Whitaker to get anymore than 10 carries barring a blow-out. Let’s see how he reads BC’s defense for 60 minutes.

-Alouette route running, SJ Green in the slot, and newcomers Brandon London and Dallas Baker will be the focal points. Will they zig left instead of right? Will they be able to read AC’s hot reads as quickly as Ben did?

-Travis Lulay, Wally Buono Loves him, should say enough, Theis could be a name that will be in the CFL for a long time. It’s his first season as a full-time starter, can he make the most of it. He’ll need to show experience because without Geroy Simon there isn’t any on the WR core.

-Billy Parker and Dwight Anderson, it’s new position for Parker on the outside and it’s the first real long look at Anderson for Alouette fans.

Final Score:

Montreal 37, BC 34.

I really like BC this year, but I liked them last season, so who knows. However, the Alouettes are the Champs for a reason, mainly is that they win at home. They were 7-2 at Percival Molson Stadium last season and both losses Anthony Calvillo did not play. Look for 80-90 total yards for Whitaker and a great day from Alouette receivers. For BC Lulay may struggle in the passing game with his young receivers but Jamal Robertson may be able to run a little tonight, maybe for a couple of TDs. We will also see how the Alouettes special teams have adjusted since their weak performance in Hamilton last week.

Ten Reasons to watch the 2011 CFL Season

The CFL season approaches and there are many things to look forward to. The League has grown coast to coast in the last five years and has started to really gain the country’s attention. Here are ten things that should spark your attention in 2011.

10-Road Warriors: The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be looking for a road win this season. In 2010 The Bombers went 4-14 and that included 0-9 away from Canada Inns Stadium. I don’t think I’ll throw in the Campbell guarantee, but Week four in Toronto could be the ice-breaker.

9-BC Bound: The West Coast province hosts the Grey Cup at season’s end and expectations are as high as they were to start 2010 with Travis Lulay. Wally Buono will give the ball to Lulay as long as he’s healthy. It’s what he does with it. The Lions 2011 season rests in his hands.

8- Four for Four: Can Marc Trestman make it four Grey Cups appearances in four seasons? If he does, the NFL has to take notice, no matter what the outcome is. It could be the end of a very short era.

7- The Return: (Including the pre-season) The Ti-Cats host the Alouettes three times before making a trip to Percival Molson Stadium. But Avon Cobourne will want to prove something to the Alouettes in their building. There will be a lot of Montreal fans that are excited for the Cobourne return on September 11th. Expect Avon to bring his best game in Montreal, just to prove a point to Jim Popp.

6-The Next Level: For the two top passers last season, Darian Durant and Kevin Glenn, its time to pick up their game. Durant needs to prove he can win the big game. As for Glenn, he needs to perform his best when facing the Alouettes and be a force that has to be contended with. They have proven it with numbers, now its time to prove it in games that will get their franchise to the next level.

5- TV Timeout: After watching HBO’s 24/7 with Pittsburgh and Washington and of course The NY Jets and Hard Knocks I’m excited for TSN’s the Extra Yard with the Toronto Argonauts. Sports live documentaries are the way to go. It’s a 4-part series that goes form now until Labour Day and is scheduled to start on Sunday July 3rd.

4-Touchdown Atlantic: It may just seem to be a meaningless mid-season regular season game in Moncton on September 25th between Calgary and Hamilton but TD Atlantic is a whole lot more. It’s an experience like no other that many CFL fans feel is a must go. It actually has a grey Cup feel and breaks the season up in two.

3-Rush to the Top: To me it’s a three horse race for the rushing crown; Fred Reid vs Joffery Reynolds vs Cory Boyd. Avon Cobourne could make a run but I’m not sure he’ll get enough carries in Hamilton, a problem he saw in Montreal. These top backs will attempt to power through many defenses and put a show on a weekly basis.

2- Record Breakers: CFL history could be made by some of the all-time greats still in the game. B.C.’s Geroy Simon needs only 1155 receiving yards to jump into #2 spot behind Milt Stegall. Montreal’s Anthony Calvillo can become Pro-Football’s all-time passing leader if he surpasses 4220 yards. If he manages to stay healthy it should be an accomplishable feat. He’d eclipse Warren Moon, Brett Favre and Damon Allen in doing so.

1-Special players: The CFL kick-returners are a special breed and the crop hasn’t been better with the Als Tim Maypray, Calgary’s Larry Taylor, Toronto’s Chad Owens and Hamilton’s Marcus Thigpen. Each one of them except Taylor, who did not play enough in 2010, had two MFG returns last season alone. Any kick, any time, start counting the TDs.

Als DC Tim Tibesar on The TEAM 990

I was hosting The Tieman Show today on The TEAM 990 for Randy Tieman and had a chance to catch up with the Alouettes new Defensive Coordinator Tim Tibesar. Tibesar joined me after the Als wrapped up training camp in Sherbrooke.

Tim and I spoke about numerous topics and players. Not that he gave away any trade secrets, but look forward to the linebackers being more involved with the defense then they already were.

Post Game Alservations: Remember the Receivers

Well that’s pre-season CFL football, I promise it gets better. 27-15 final for the Alouettes over the Bombers.

Here’s what I noticed

-Only 1 quarter of play for Adrian Mcpherson, But ran the ship like it was his. There are many CFL coaches that wish he was the man calling the shots on their team.

-Rough go-around for Brandon Whitaker only three carries for minus 2 yards. However, twice he was met in the backfield by a Bomber defender that beat Ryan Bomben who was replacing Scott Flory, who had the night off.

-On a pass blocking note, Whitaker didn’t miss an assignment, which is the good news.

-Eesh the ghosts of Duval at Percival Molson already? Whyte’s 1st FG attempt wide right from 38 yards out.

-My players to watch showed up early and often. Brandon London started with a huge contested grab on the 2nd play of scrimmage for 47 yards he finished with 8 catches and 145 yards, and Bo Bowling had the 9 yard TD catch to kick things off then his final numbers were 7 for 67.

-De’Audra Dix looked primed, took some chances ball-hawking but its pre-season and I can appreciate that. He knows he’s competing for playing time.

-The sack on Ricky Santos in the 2nd quarter, went right through Kristian Matte and Chris Pino.

-Bo Bowling reminds me of Ben Cahoon…. On the field.

-Avon Cobourne was paying attention to the game he tweeted his well wishes: @AvonCobourne: ALS looking for a running back and they have 8 carries going to in to the 4th. Good luck fellas.

-The B squad on Defense played and looked like a B squad, The Alouettes better stay healthy on that side of the ball.

-I liked Tad Crawford’s speed versus Boulay’s, this battle for the safety position should continue into the first few weeks of the season.

-Walter Spencer left the game with an elbow injury, Trestman deems it precautionary

-Trestman felt they were forced to pass the ball early and abandon the run because Winnipeg kept putting 8 in the box. He wanted to run more

The Als will head back to Bishop’s university to continue Training Camp over the weekend, they expect to get some bodies back on the field. We can also expect some cuts to be made after tonights game. The Als next play in Hamilton next Wednesday, It’ll be AC time!

The Als 2011 season kicks off tonight at Percival Molson with a Pre-season tilt against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. If you are at the Stadium or at home watching on TSN or RDS, you may need some help figuring out who to pay attention too.

I've decided to lend a helping hand and list off some players to key in on for tonight's game.

#14 WR Brandon London may get significant playing time. There has been alot of injuries to the recieving core and he has impressed the coaching staff and his teammates at Bishop's

#0 WR Bo Bowling A year remove from Oklahoma State, Bowling has an interesting background to say the least, but the talent is there. Kinda has that inside slot Cahoon type of feeling.

#94 DL Jermaine McGhee: Big body looking to play some football. The DL will be tough to crack for any newcomers, but the Alouettes should be giving him a deep look. He moves very well for 257lbs.

#33 DB Dwight Anderson, Sure he's been around the league awhile but he'll want to impress the Als fans early in his stay. Don't know how long he'll play but he's a ball-hawk.

#26 RB Yvenson Bernard, Looking for a full time gig in The CFL, formerly in the Bombers organization. He may want to prove himself against his old team. Short but stocky, and quick, very quick.

#51 OT Kristian Matte and #53 OT Chris Pino, I'm curious who will be the back-up tackle behind Perrett and Bourke.

It should be fun, and hopefully both teams will keep it close until the end of the game. Since it doesn't mean anything at least make it fun.

Alservations: From Training Camp

Have no fear, Alservations is back for the 2011 season. Anytime I am able to escape the Radio studio and head to a football field, there will be Alservations. I Headed off to Sherbrooke today to catch up with our Local Canadian Football team, here are a few things I did notice:

-Despite not playing on Thursday, Anthony Calvillo wants to get in his reps during practice. Even though he didn’t toss the ball around, he still participated in the RB drills handing off primarily to Brandon Whitaker

-Brandon Whitaker’s attitude has changed along with his status with the team. In the post practice interview he did not sound or act like the practice roster player I talked to at the end of last year.

-WR Brandon London is trying to make his mark. As far as offensive players go, he definitely stood out more than anyone, making numerous tough hard catches that he had to compete for in the air with the DBs.

-Bo Bowling was probably the receiver with the most catches.

-Prechae Rodriguez looked out of sorts on a few plays, turning right when the ball went left and dropping at least one that was right in his hands. He has missed a couple of days because of injury.

-RB Yvenson Bernard’s legs are fast; when he gets into the open, watch out!

-DB Billy Parker looked good at CB, because of injuries and Dwight Anderson slated to be at Defensive HB, Parker has been on the Outside of the defence. Making him match up well will the taller outside receivers

-Despite not practicing due to a ‘rest day’ from Marc Trestman John Bowman participated in every DL drill, coaching and motivating his teammates.

-As for Kickers, looks like Sandro DeAngelis prefers the 2 different cleats style, whereas Sean Whyte likes to match.

-WR Eric Deslauriers looks to play a bigger role in the offence with Ben Cahoon moving on. Well his voice was at least heard. He was by far the Alouette with the most energy on the field. I’m pretty sure some teammates appreciated his liveliness and others just shook their head.

-And have no worries Marc Trestman still runs the show; on numerous occasions calling out players that lagged behind between drills. One can only assume this is a daily occurrence.

- Brian Bratton realises that Cahoon is gone and that Kerry Watkins has yet to arrive and with Jamel Richardson on the sidelines he was the elder statesman for receivers today. He relished the role and felt that SJ Green also played a leadership role too.

As for the upcoming pre-season game Thursday night at Percival Molson Stadium vs Winnipeg, here are a few line-up notes:

Sean Whyte will kick for the first 2-3 quarters, then Sandro DeAngelis. It’ll be either Ricky Santos or Marc-Olivier Brouillette as holder.

Adrian McPherson will start, then the hometown fans will see Ricky Santos and the game will wrap up with Josh Neiswander.

Most of the RBs will get touches, starting with Whitaker, but then Yvenson Bernard, Emmanuel Marc (if he can go) and Rashad Slaughter. Dahrran Diedrick is in the mix too.

Trestman finished up by saying the goal is to get most of the ‘new’ guys time in a game situation. Don’t expect the vets to be in their for long, so don’t be late.

Ten Reasons to get Pumped for the Als T-Camp

We are looking at approximately 2 weeks from the start of the Alouettes Training Camp, With the NFL on the fritz, you should be excited for the CFL. The Als are looking for the three peat, the camp this year should be one of the best we’ve seen in years. Here are ten reasons to pay attention.

10-New Kicker: The Alouettes traded for and signed Sean Whyte from BC. Damon Duval, as Jim Popp Said, is ‘on the streets’. There is no doubt in my mind Whyte will be kicking for the Als in 2011, but don’t be shocked to see Colt David at Training Camp working on his punting as he’s still Als Property.

9-Dwight Anderson interviews: With Avon gone, we here in the media need a go to. All indications from our Calgary friends say Dwight is our man. CFL players are a very relaxed group, so I’m looking forward to some loose lips.

8-Young OL talent: There’s a big change looking at the Alouettes offensive line over the last few years. Last years grey Cup starters in Age- Woodruff 26, Brodeur 28, Perrett 27, Bourke 28, No need let everyone know that 2-time OL of the year Scott Flory is in charge at 34 years old. This list doesn’t include the young guns from the 2011 draft and Matte, Steenbergen, Bomben. They are big, they are skilled, they are competitive, should be fun.

7-Anwar Stewart: I remember covering the Als T-Camp in 2008, Marc Trestman’s 1st season, and there was talk that Stewart might be on the way out. Well I watched him very carefully and he was by far the best and hardest working Defensive player throughout camp that season and each one since. IF you make the trip to Bishop’s just watch #9, it’s worth it.

6-Tim Tibesar: With Tim Burke off to Winnipeg, LB Coach Tibesar will get his shot at running the defence. Look for a lot of Linebacker involvement, that’s what he played, that’s what he was coaches. Will there be more or less blitzes? We’ll find out won’t we.

5-Marc Trestman: there are no clipboards; there are no golf carts… It’s all Trestman. This is a man that runs a very strong and tight ship and it’s fun to watch. He doesn’t let his players take a play off and neither does he.

4-The Next Ben Cahoon: As Cahoon moves over to the coaching ranks at BYU. Who will the Alouettes dub as the next Canadian great., Deriveaux, Deslauriers or will the Als go with a newcomer like Jerry Porter, Dallas Baker? Expect SJ Green to get more love in that slot back position in 4 receiver sets, But that 5th WR could be anyone.

3-Not so friendly Safety battle: Gone are the days that Mathieu Proulx and Etienne Boulay could be easily exchanged on any given play at the Safety position. With the Proulx retirement and the Tad Crawford acquisition this is something to key in on. I don’t know the personal relationship between Crawford and Boulay but I can only assume they aren’t as chummy as Proulx and Boulay were.

2-Anthony Calvillo: Honestly it’s just a treat to watch him play football. The Als have the best player in the game, and that list includes the leagues reigning MOP Henry Burris. Throw in an eventful off-season for the seasoned vet. He is one to watch very closely.

1-RB Battle: With Avon gone, the much-hyped RB battle will be front and centre come early June. Brandon Whitaker has gotten the vote of confidence from the Head Coach but De’Audra Cobb, Yvenson Bernard and Ahman Green will be the front-runners to steal it away. Cobb has the most CFL Experience of the 4, but Green carries the best CV. Bernard will the one that will want to prove himself on the field. Since they all can run well, whoever can check their ego and block the best will most likely come out on top.

Off Season Alservations- In case you Missed it

For the Back to back Grey Cup Champions, The Alouettes have had an incredibly busy off-season. You would think that Status-Quo would be the way to go. But winning titles has its downsides, like everyone else wanting a piece of that tasty winning pie. So if you have been hibernating or just decided not to pay attention the CFL or the Als he’s a quick overlook at what the Alouettes have been doing since the 98th Grey Cup in Edmonton.

Retirements:
- SB Ben Cahoon : Yup, Shocking News. #86 the all-time receptions leader in the CFL hung up the cleats. He loved Montreal and Montreal loved him. His press conference was a moment that he let fans and media into the real Ben Cahoon full of life and humour that was rarely shown outside of the Als Locker room. Even through his numbers were down in 2010 he will be the most missed by the club. Cahoon will continue in Football as a receivers coach at BYU

- C Paul Lambert: In an interesting couple of days, Lambert was released by the Als and chose the route of retirement after a couple of days thinking about playing elsewhere. Jim Popp asked Lambert to stay on but at a significant pay-cut. Lambert’s last 2 seasons have been filled with injuries allowing Luc Brodeur-Jourdain time to prove he can play at centre. Like Cahoon Lambert will join the College coaching ranks but a little closer to home with McGill.

Re-signings:
QB Anthony Calvillo: AC gets a brand new 2 year contract but better than that he’s healthy. In an emotional interview after the Grey Cup, Calvillo revealed that he had lesions on his thyroid that would need to be looked at. They were cancerous. But Calvillo’s treatment has been quick a success and he has been given the green light to prepare for the 2011 season as per usual.

LB Chip Cox: is here to stay. The dynamic linebacker who is coming off a career year has been re-signed in Montreal on a 4 year contract. Expect Cox to make plays in Montreal for a long time.

WR SJ Green: was being pursued once again by NFL clubs but Jim Popp convinced the high-light reel catching wideout to stay in Montreal with a 3 year contract. The big question is will they use him at the slotback position where Cahoon was or use him on the outside, either way expect big plays.
WR Jerry Porter: Former NFLer is in the fold in Montreal, but we’ve seen that train before (see OJ Santiago). There is a relationship with Trestman from his Raider days.

Plus, DB Jerald Brown (3 years), DL JP Bekasiak (3 years), LS Martin Bedard (3 years), RB Brandon Whitaker(2 years), WR Danny Derisveaux (2 years), RB Ahman Green –Yup the Former Packer(2 years)

Free-Agency Losses:
RB Avon Cobourne: The beloved Grey Cup MVP of 2009 is no longer an Alouette and it was all about money. It’s the CFL, No one in their right mind would blame another player for leaving an organization for greener pastures (pardon the pun). Avon will get $55 000 up front and $75 000 for the next 3 seasons from the Hamilton Ti-Cats. So don’t worry Als fans you’ll see plenty of Cobourne. Look for a battle at training camp in Hamilton with DeAndra Cobb. For the Als I think its Whitaker’s job to lose.

WR/R Andrew Hawkins: Off the NFl, he signed with the St.Louis Rams. Plus he’ll be in Geogre Clooney’s new Movie The Ides of March.

Plus, WR/R Larry Taylor (Cal), DL Shawn Mayne (Win).
ON the free Agent Market: QB Chris Leak, K Damon Duval, LB Ramon Guzman

Free Agent Acquisitions:
DB Dwight Anderson: Probably one of the bigger defensive names out there and Jim Popp decided to go out of his house to help improve the defensive backfield. Anderson is known for his big trash talking mouth. But he can also bring it, with 5 INTs last season for one of the best defensive cores in the league in Calgary. With Brown, Parker and Estelle already in the fold, the Als DBs will line up nicely with their star receiving core

S Tad Crawford: A Canadian safety go figure, from the BC Lions. He’ll battle with Etienne Boulay for starting time. What about Matt Proulx, don’t be surprised if he’s added to the retirement list, but he can still play (when healthy).

RB Yvenson Bernard: from Win. He’ll attempt to grab that starting position at RB. For all those RBs trying out, note of advice, make sure you can pass block.

Coaching Staff:
Def Coor Tim Burke: is no longer on Staff, he accepted the same position with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Burke wants to be a Head Coach in the league and did not see a future in Montreal

LB coach Tim Tibesar: is your New DC in Montreal. An Alouette move by promoting within, he’ll still work with the Linebackers.

DB coach Daronte Jones is the newest Coaching staff Member, Jones was a defensive assistant with the UCLA Bruins in the NCAA last season.

HC Marc Trestman: Nominated for the third consecutive year for Coach of the year in the CFL. He’s up against Ken Miller and Jim Barker, Trestman won it last season.

News and Notes:
-Former Alouettes Head Coach Don Matthews and Former Alouettes WR Terry Vaughn are both to be inducted to the CFL Hall of Fame in 2011

-Random Signings: RB Remene Alston Jr., DE Jermaine McGhee, LB Buster Davis, QB Paul Smith and WR Reggie Smith, R Rashaud Slaughter.

-LB Mike Labinjo was acquired via trade form Calgary but the Alouettes voided the deal due to concerns about his injured elbow.

-The Alouettes have had informal conversatiosn with former Ti-Cats Kicker Nick Setta

-Still no indication on the Alouettes new Team President

Well like I said it’s been a busy off-season and it will only continue. I’m sure I missed something along the way but I used to be a Kicker, so 80% is satisfactory.

Post Game Alservations: Als Well that Ends Well

It is a day late, but yesterday was a travel day, so without further ado the final Post Game Alservations of the 2010 season

-Even in the chill of Edmonton, I don’t think many people thought it was going to be a 39 total point game.

-Congrats to Jamel Richardson, who not only made any catch coming his ay, bu the timing of his catches really earned him the MVP.

-It seemed that SJ Green took over the job of Kerry Watkins on Sunday, making space for #18.

-I bet if he had even just 1 TD pass, AC is your game MVP.

-The OL made great adjustments after the first half, after allowing a couple of sacks early.

-Only 12 touches from Wes Cates, I felt Ken Miller Abandoned him too early in the game.

-Darian Durant is 0-2 in Grey Cups, Well AC was once 1-5, He’ll get his, Durant is a quality QB.

-Despite a rollercoaster season, #17 Billy Parker played tight and aggressive against the Sask Recievers,

-the Whole secondary that was being attacked stepped up and held string throughout the game.

-If Als fans are wondering, Vancouver has more than one 5 star hotel for Grey Cup 99.

-It most possibly could have been Ben Cahoon’s final game in an Alouettes uniform, don’t be surprised if Matt Proulx played his final game the week before. ACL injuries are tough on Football players.

-If Marc Trestman were to live for the State of Minnesota in NCAA or NFL. I think that the Als would be well placed under Scott Milanovitch, who has been learning for the Best CFL coach or three years running.

-Now learning what AC has gone through this season, anybody want to change their Most outstanding vote?

-Avon’s 2 TDs gives him 6 TDs in 6 games as a starting RB in the playoffs.

-Damon Duval struggled for the second straight grey Cup and was sub-par by his own accord all season long. Finding a Kicker that can Kick and Punt is hard to do. The Als have to play this one right, but first thing should be to bring in competition for Training camp in June in 2011.

-Grey Cup Parade is on Wednesday, get those work excuses ready today.

-I wonder how gaudy the 2010 Grey Cup ring will be

Grey Cup 98-Keys to Victory

It's been a rather tame week for the Alouettes and Roughriders heading to their Grey Cup match this evening. besides the Als claiming second class treatment but that has nothing to do with on field play.

That is where we will focus MFG's Keys to Victory for both sides

How the Alouettes will win the Grey Cup:

-Offense, They will need to convert most drives into Touchdowns. Field goals will help however, short Field goals from the redzone could come back and haunt them.

-No dropped balls from Jamel Richardson, I think everyone knows how explosive and strong #18 is, however is is prone to drop some balls on occasion, that cannot happen in this game, it will stall drives.

-get Avon Cobourne involved, Last week I thought the magic number for Avon against Toronto was 16 touches, On his 16th he scored his TD and went on to dominate the Argos Defence. Magic number today 14 touches. AC will need him in pass protection.

-Defensive stand early, an early two and in most games for the Alouettes defence amplifies their game the rest of the way, its been that way all season.

-Tackling Darian Durant, When an Alouettes defensive player as a hand on him, they cannot let him loose. He will make you pay.

-Minimum 2 turnovers, 1 may not be enough.

-Focus on the game not the crowd, the Alouettes have not been strong on the road all season long, just like last year the Rider fans travelled in droves, it will be 85% green in Edmonton.

How the Roughriders will win the Grey Cup:

-Scoring, the Als will score, so Saskatchewan will have to be able to go shot for shot with them, just like they did in the Week one thriller.

-Keep Kerry Watkins under wraps, his sideline and deep play opens up the middle of the field for Jamel Richardson, if he has 4 or less catches, The Riders will be pleased.

-Wes Cates, He is a double threat just like Cobourne, With the pressure that will be forced on Durant look for Draw and Screen dump offs. If he turns them into first downs, it'll be a long day for the Als D. He Needs a Minimum of 17 touches in the
cold.

-Hit Anthony Calvillo, it may not be a sack and it may be a penalty but its cold and AC likes his comfort, they need to make him uncomfortable, look for the rushes to come on the left side of the line.

-Patience, the Alouettes drives may be quicker and shorter, but Durant may want to take his time down the field and keep AC cold on the sidelines.

Either way it I think we are in for another treat from these two teams, I would be pretty shocked if one team blew out the other. If there is going to be a blowout, I can only see the Als putting their foot down. For the Riders their victory will have a flare for the dramatics.

Post Game Alservations: AL-berta Bound

Well the Alouettes are back on top of the football world after taking the last month off. Big victory 48-17 over the Argos, I'd like to say I told youso but I predicted 47-16, maybe next time.

On to the Alservations...

-3 straight 2 and outs on defence, a 53 yard bomb for a TD and an 85 yard Punt return for A TD is one hell of a way to get 58 021 fans into a game quickly.

- Avon Cobourne is a playoff performer, check the numbers: in 5 playoff games as a starting RB he has 89 touches for 609 yards and 4 TDs.

-AC looked rested after a couple of weeks off, dont't you think.

-John Bowman and Chip Cox both showed why they are the leaders on this team defensively, Cox led the team intackles with 8 and Bowman had 2 sacks.

-Both Matt Proulx and Mark Estelle were injured in this game, Looks like a knee injury for Proulx, more to come tomorrow.

-Eric Wilson said it best after the game 'If you really want to talk you better show up, Montreal is a team that can back it up and we found out today that Toronto is not'

-Cleo Lemon looked lost and thats a props to Tim Burke and his defensive game plan.

-Kerry Watkins brings a different dynamic to this Als line-up, he's a guy that opens lanes up for himself and his teammates.

-I don't think Hamilton would have faired any better.

-Toronto's Defence got AC to the turf three times in the Als first two drives, which is what they wanted to do, however they trailed 10-0.

-Cory Boyd may have played his last game in the CFL' not because he was hurt, but because he is NFL good.

-At least Duval didn't miss a FG, he only had it blocked...

-And good for Tim Maypray, alot of eyes were focused in on him... except Toronto's Punt cover team...

-Despite all speculation to the contrary, Paul Lambert is going to The Grey Cup to cheer on his teammates.

the Alouettes leave on Tuesday for Edmonton, still not sure if MFG is hitting Alberta this year, nonetheless we will have it covered for you.

How They will Win the East Final

Well Kick-off is a short time away I guess it's time to see why or how each team could win this game.

The Alouettes:
-Need to revert back to the competive team that they are and play like they played all season long (in games that mattered) the last three have been less than ordinary.
-Revert back to only one RB in protection and send out the 5-6 recievers each play for AC.
-Quick short passes no need to bomb it out against a strong Toronto defence, No need to create more 2nd and longs than necessary
-Run defence, it's been the Als bread and butter all season long, force Cleo Lemon to throw.
-Ball possession, Toronto will look for fumbles since AC doesn't throw many INTs.
-Avon Cobourne should touch the ball minimum 16 times via the run or pass
-Find Kerry Watkins in the end-zone he scores then everyone else becomes open.
-almost perfect kicking game, I think Duval will have enough room to miss one, but he shouldn't

The Argos:
-A TD from all three facettes of the game, at least one from Offence, Defence and Special teams.
-Cleo Lemon needs to manage the game, not win it, He should go Trent Dilfer style.
-Cory Boyd to hit the Century mark, when he runs rampant it helps Lemon ten-fold.
-minimum 2 Turnovers from the Als offence.
-perfect kicking game, The Argos will need every point they can get.

Taylor Tough Fit for Team

The Alouettes released Kick-returner Larry Taylor yesterday. The news was somewhat surprising but did spark up some twitter talk on my long bus ride to Baie Comeau.

Larry Taylor of course is the reigning special teams player of the year, turning his 2009 season into an NFL opportunity with the New York Jets.

That is where the Alouettes lost Taylor this year, knowing that there was a chance they could get him back mid-seaosn the Als gave little-known returner Tim Maypray a chance. Maypray looked great returning Missed Field goals however hs punt returns were less than spectacular. So then Taylor was released but he took his time looking for another NFL job before coming back up north. he played 1 quarter had a hip-pointer injury then left the team for family reasons and that was it.

could the Alouettes have used Taylor this Sunday in the East final, absolutely, but was he the key componant to a victory, not even close. His time away from the team really hurt his ability to know the kick coverages which in the first place has been spotty at best. Coach Trestman did leave the door open for the 2011 season, somehting the Als would like very much I suppose to have Taylor around for a complete 18 game schedule.

I like making predictions, not because of the 'I told you so' factor, more because it's just fun in general, Plus we Are dealing with the CFL, Where anything can happen any week.

Toronto at Hamilton:
What Toronto needs to do to win: Run, Run, Run. The Argos do not have a passing offence. Cory boyd will need to throttle the Argos on the road. Toronto's Defence and Special teams are more than capable of outplaying their counterparts, However They will need t score more than twenty to win, I'm not sure that they can.

What Hamilton needs to do to win: Score, Which means they need Kevin Glenn's 'A' game. Glenn showed this season that he's turning in an elite QB, it's time to shine in the Playoffs. Plus All 4 of The Ti-Cats East Nominees need to bring it as well, Markeith Knowlton on defence, and Marwan Hage, Dave Stala and Marcus Thigpen offensively.

Result: It'll be tight, it'll be hard fought, it'll be Hamilton 22-19 over their provincial rivals.

BC at Saskatchewan
What BC needs to do to win: They needs everything that has happened in the last three weeks to continue, they needs the Riders to suck and they need Travis Lulay playing like an experience QB in the CFL. The Lions won out to get in, they need to make sure that just getting into the playoffs wasn't enough.

What Saskatchewan needs to do to win: Remember the the 2009 Grey Cup. Just like the Alouettes, the Riders did not have much turnover, many of these players suffered that devastating loss to the Als in Calgary last Novemeber. They played Game 1 of the season angry and they beat The Champs in a thriller they need to remember that they are a good team, because they haven't shown it in the last month of the season.

A Week to Reflect a Year

The Montreal Alouettes get this week off, before returning to work on Saturday in preparation for the East Final on Sunday November 21st at the Big O.

The Als will be able to sit back and watch The Hamilton Ti-cats host The Toronto Argonauts, hopefully for them in a tight, hard-fought, Gruelling affair.

However, The Als will have to look back at the 2010 with mixed feelings
-a 12-6 record (losing 2 of the 3 meaningless ga,mes at season's end).
-475 points against only 5th best in a league of 8, Both Toronto and Hamilton gave up less.
-A 5-4 road record which has only one convincing road win in Winnipeg.

These are numbers sure, but the fact is the Alouettes were not playing convincing football for the past month. To look on the opposite side of that, the Alouettes are veteran group with veteran leaders which means two things: 1- they know how to win
2-they know they don't have much time left to win again.

So I do believe that the mentality of the 2010 edition of the Als means alot in their off week. They need to realise they are in the driver's seat, be it Toronto or Hamilton that comes to Olympic Stadium in a couple of weeks. They are favored, they haven't lost at home with AC under centre since 2008.

With all the negative that has been flyign around, there is some positive. I'm sure Head Coach Marc trestman is aware of that when he gets things ready for a thourough week of practice

Why are we here?
What do we watch?

I'm not exactly sure, it will be very difficult to evaluate anything or anyone on this afternoon's season finale.

I guess Adrian McPherson will be priority number 1 to watch, however he won't have any of AC's targets to play with and if he does it won't be for long.
Second to look at I would see how Mr. Damon Duval is kicking.
Thirdly, Special teams coverage. keep an eye on that.

For Toronto, well does it really matter.

It comes to no surprise here at MFG that, according to reports, Anthony Calvillo will not play versus the Argos at home on Sunday.
Adrian McPherson will start the game in his stead.

I didn't think AC should have played the second half of the last game, but I guess the competition got to Head Coach Marc Trestman.
The only thing that this affects really is anyone foolish to put money down on a meaningless CFL game or for those in MFG's CFL Pick'em Win'em with the bragging rights on the line.

If you are betting, Just remember the Als haven't lost at home with AC under centre. Their one loss was to BC when Chris Leak got the start.

This news is good news for Als fans.

Flip Floppin' Als

It's a tough game to judge tonight.
On the air today on The TEAM 990 I said I'm taking The Ti-Cats. I like taking teams that have something to play for. I know the Als are resting Avon Cobourne and aren't 100% healthy. But there's something about Marc Trestman that leads me to believe he's going to hav his group primed for this divisional match-up.

I expect different looks for the Als, Maybe they'll work, maybe they won't. Plus Hamilton just always has a tough time with that Montreal Hurdle.

With a side of caution I flip flop to the Als in this one. I just hope that'll be fun is all. Got a long weekend of work ahead of me, Need some Friday night football.

Eyes on the Prize

The task is simple. Stay healthy, stay sharp.

The Montreal Alouettes have three regular season games remaining, tonight versus Hamilton, then a home and home with Toronto. Montreal will face either of those Teams at home in the East final.

This is a scenerio that the Als have faced the last three seasons under Marc Trestman. Who should play and how much? The Als would like to stay sharp and make sure their offence and defence are both hitting their stride by the end of November. However they'd like to do so with a their A line-up healthy.

The ultimate prize for the Alouettes is to lift the Grey Cup in Alberta for the second straight year, but they would be able to do so without their prized possession, Anthony Calvillo.

This year has ben full of 'scares' with knee, finger and rib issues when it comes to their star Quarterback. I expect Calvillo to play this week and next, alot. But if I were the coach I'd have a protection game plan in place.

-Not one play, none, would have less than six blockers.
-If there is a blitz, ground the ball.
-Hand off the ball 70% of the time.

The Als can lose all three games and as long as AC wasn't touched, you can call that sucessful.

Do I expect that to happen, no I'm not the coach. But it is a suggestion.

David Kicking Away

Colt David’s Canadian Football League debut with the Montreal Alouettes was perfect.

Taking over for injured kicker Damon Duval, David was successful on all six of his field goal attempts and added four converts.

“I felt good, there’s always room to improve on everything, but I was thankful I was able to help my team come ahead with the win,“ said David. “You can always improve on everything from kickoffs to punting you can always do better because you never have a perfect game as a kicker.”

The Alouettes beat up on the Calgary Stampeders on Thanksgiving Monday by a score of 46-19 and Montreal’s kicker was responsible for 22 of those points.

Montreal had a clean sweep of the player of the week honors with Anthony Calvillo taking the offensive honors, Anwar Stewart taking the defensive award and David being name the best player on special teams.

“It was a pretty big accomplishment, you know I didn’t even know until the day at practice but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates so I’m thankful for their help in getting me in good situations and providing good blocking, snaps and holds. I just did a small part,” explained David.

Despite being soft spoken and mild-tempered, the Alouette backup kicker doesn’t feel pressure because of the big stages that he’s already played on.

“I don’t really get nervous, playing at Louisiana State University we played in some pretty big games but it felt good to play and be a part of a team again but I wasn’t really nervous,” said the former LSU kicker.

David got his second opportunity on Sunday afternoon as the Montreal Alouettes hosted the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Not the second showing David was hoping for, he went two for five kicking field goals and had trouble punting the ball.

Duval is battling a hamstring tear that is giving him difficulties while punting. He appears to be close to returning to the lineup but has been fully supportive of his fill in.

“I think he’s done a great job, it’s such a big part of this league kicking and getting good field position so he’s just got to continue to step up and continue to do a great job,” said Duval.

David’s in a tough spot right now, not knowing whether he should settle in or search for the next opportunity. For the time being , he’s taking it day by day.

“It’s hard trying to settle in, you don’t know what to do with groceries, food, stuff like that you don’t want to go and buy stuff and then you’re going home,” said David. “Right now I’m just happy to be part of a team and be playing football.”

Alservations: Ho-Hum Als Clinch

The Alouettes won the game (barely) 22-19 over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday afternoon, thus Clinching the East division for the third straight year.
Here's this week's Alservations

-It was fun, as expected alot more defensive plays than I had envisioned.

-I've said it many times on MFG, I would take Stephen Jyles on my team anyday. It seems he's finding his QB groove at the wrong time of the season.

-With so much focus on John Bowman and Jermaine McElveen, sometimes people forget the ALouettes have Eric Wilson, he played a big role on Sunday

-AC mis-threw more balls than usual, however his bottom line was still impressive 25-37 271 yards and 2 tds

-Ben Cahoon TD spells relief for him and his fans, His last TD came in the Grey Cup in Calgary.

-Ramon Guzman is quietly becoming one of the Als best defensive players.

-Speaking of Best defensive players, Chip Cox's play at the end of the game to strip and recover is a perfect example why he should be up for Defensive player of the year in 2010 form the east.

-I think that Colt David experiment is over.

-Luc Brodeur Jourdain looks better at Centre than at Left guard

3 more games left in the season, only one home game, the Als get a chance to play their playoff opponent either Hamilton ot Toronto. How much will Coach Trestman show his opposition.

The Bombers are in Montreal Today. They are the last team to beat The Alouettes with Anthony Calvillo under centre at home. Will it happen again?
I don't think so, however don't expect this game to be a walk for the Als.

The Blue Bombers are coming off an emotional victory over the Lions last monday and Stephen Jyles knows he has the support of his teammates behind hm as the starter. The Alouettes are one victory away form clinching the East and they still have Hamilton and a pair against Toronto left, so The division is in the bag.

The Als injuries may show more this week compared to last. Look for Paul LAPolice to line up Doug Brown up against Luc Brodeur-Jourdain and Andrew Woodruff, It should be an interesting match-up.

We've already seen the Bombers get to AC this year (see rib injury).

If the Als do run away with this one, that means Avon Cobourne will be running early and often and well.

I suspect the with October in full swing and November around the corner, Cobourne will be playing a bigger role for the Als.

Can't go against the Als at home, however it'll be tight and a fun gam eto watch

Giving Carter Credit

Montreal Alouette fullback Kerry Carter doesn’t always get the credit he deserves.

On the offensive side of the football, the run game goes to Avon Cobourne, the aerial attack goes to a plethora of receivers and the protection of quarterback Anthony Calvillo is credited to the offensive line.

“There are a lot of things that people don’t see out there, I try to take pride in everything that I do and blocking is something I’ve tried to improve on since I didn’t do it very much before I got here,” said Carter. “It’s something that I want to improve on every single week and every single day and I think that’s an important thing for me.”

Standing on Calvillo’s right side, is Carter, a Montreal Alouette since 2007 and has been a staple with coach Marc Trestman’s offense. With that said it has been a learning curve for Carter since he entered the Canadian football league.

“It’s just about getting out there and doing it because for me I played tailback my entire career so I never did any run blocking,” said Carter. “The learning curve for me is just coming up here and trying to see where I fit in and where I can contribute. It’s not the most glorified position, you don’t get to catch touchdown passes or make a lot of runs but your teammates appreciate what you do and that’s what’s most important to have the respect of your teammates and coaches.”

Not being in the spotlight and not getting praised isn’t something that Carter is used to. He’s spent time with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent as well as with the Washington Red Skins.

During his time playing college football at Stanford he saw the ball much more often. But still, Carter knows his role with the team and feels a sense of accomplishment helping out with the protection of his quarterback.

Although fans might not notice the small things that Carter brings to the field it doesn’t go unseen with his teammates.

“"Kerry Carter is one of those guys who's the unsung hero around here, hes a leader on the team and he does the little things that keep us working," said his partner in the backfield Avon Cobourne. "We're glad we have him, he's an asset and we all feel like when he does get the ball he makes plays."

Still, with all of the praise from the coaching staff and his colleagues the Alouette fullback would like to touch to ball more often and find his way into the end zone on occasion.

The management staff with the Alouettes did recognized the intangibles that Carter brings to the field and they signed him to a contract extension in February.

“I’m hard working, dedicated and focused individual who’s trying to get better on and off the field every day,” said Carter. “I’m a student of life and I do whatever it takes to improve, I take pride in my job and everything that I do.”

Well the Als were able to pull through with the big 46-19 home win against Calgary.
It's kinda funny how this game went down exactly how i thought it would, however I did not expect a 27 point differencial.

on to the Alservations...
-First thing is first congrats to Ben Cahoon on 1007 receptions in the CFL, the most all time.

-If you have never met Ben Cahoon, well your missing out on a great individual.

-If I were the referee I'd given Ben the first down on that play

-He was 100% embarrassed that they stopped the play to congratulate him.

-Cahoon said he felt some pressure because his family flew up for the occasion and didn't want them to wait another week.

-AC was happy it was he that threw to cahoon on the record breaking play, it was called a run play in the huddle.

-on to the game, 2 TDs in 33 seconds was the fastest Brian Bratton ever scored in his entire playing career

-Henry Burris look dis-interested, 4 turnovers on his own.

-I still think Burris has the goods to be a QB that can win the Grey Cup, but he'll have to put together 2 straight weeks of strong performances

-Ramon Guzman was the spark plug early on for the Als defence on the first series he stopped Joffrey Reynolds in his tracks and forced a intentional grounding penalty on Henry Burris

-Anwar Stewart was the spark plug the rest of the way, with two sacks and a forced fumble

-Billy Parker was alot stronger and was close to unbeatable this week.

-and Colt David is a great placekicker 6 for 6 on FGs, however his punting and kickoffs need alot of work.

Battle of Kicks

As our good friend Herb Z from the Gazette pointed out to on Tuesday. The Alouettes will have to play week 15 against Calgary without Kicker Damon Duval who has a Hamstring injury.

Two Kickers are trying out for the gig this week at practice.
Colt David, Alouettes fans remember him from pre-season fame in Winnipeg.
Amd Sam Swank who was recently cut from the New York football Giants.

If Duval is out long term I can see this being an issue, but for one week, why don't we just call this fun. As a former football Kicker myself, I should have thrown my name in the hat for Coach Trestman, I used to be gold form 42 yards in. Now I'm getting off topic.

Special teams are so important in the CFL game 1/3 of the plays, so whoever wins will have an impact on the Alouettes ability to beat the top team in the league on monday.

Why Montreal should beat Calgary

First a quick apology to the readers, it's been awhile. I'm Sorry.

Now that that is out of the way, on to business at hand.

The Montreal Alouettes versus the Calgary Stampeders.

I love the revenge week, I love that the CFL has set it up that you play the same opponent this late into the season back to back in a home and home. The Als of course lost game one on the road, but there are many reasons why the Alouettes should win game two on Thanksgiving Monday.

1- The Als with Anthony Calvillo under centre are still perfect at Percival Molson Stadium over the last two seasons.

2-Despite Injuries to veterans (Watkins, Lambert) the Als have capable back-ups that have experience. They are not completely fresh.

3-Whenever the Als defence gave up 20 or more points two weeks straight, this season they've held their opposition to under 18 points in the next game.

4-The team won't spoil Ben Cahoon's record breaking day, He'll catch 4. Probably a TD too

5- Coach Trestman will make adjustments a) cause he lost b)because of injury, Hufnagel will not because plan A worked.

6-Henry Burris has'nt been consistant all season long, he's thrown a league high 16 INTS, the Als already have picked off 17 passes.

I could make a case on why The Stamps should win this game however, we'll save that for another day.

Catching up with AC

Had the opportunity to chat with Anthony Calvillo today to see how his injury is progressing.

-As we all know is is targetting the September 11th match-up versus hamilton as his return date.
-He is not playing because he and the doctors do not know what would appen to his ribs/sternum if he gets hit again.
-He has been throwing on the side, however he has yet to really plant and step into a throw.
-Still has an issue when taking deep breathes
-exoects to practice fully on next Tuesday, if he does, expect him to play.
-Anyone that blames Scott flory for his injury, doesnèt understand the Als blocking scheme
-Age has nothing to do wth his injuries this season
-He is excited to see how Chris Leak plays
-He realizes that this is a great opportunity for him to practice and work with the number 1 unit, becaus ehe doesnt get that chance normally.
-expects the team to rally around Leak

Mid Week Practice Alservations

they let me out once again! It's always nice to hit Alouettes practice on beautiful days and today was one of them.

-The practice was short maybe a an hour and 15 minutes total, it wasn't too humid and at a considerable ammount of time was spent working on the special teams.

-Calvillo was gloveless, but had his right index finger taped. he threw very sharp and direct short passes very well. I felt he missed on a couple longer throws to Brian Bratton and Jamel Richardson, but the coach seemed to feel different about when I asked him.

'I don't agree with that I thought he threw the ball very well the entire day'

Hey what do I know, I do know that coach Trestman knows QBs so lets side with him on this onl.

-#60 Andrew Woodruff took all the 1st unit snaps a Left guard, if he starts, that would make 3 LGs in 3 weeks.

-#31 Mark Estelle did not practice today but has been cleared to hit the field tomorrow, mor eon the CB position then.

-I spoke with 4 defensive players following the practice, Woldu, Wilson, Bowman and Guzman. the word 'Beast' came up on more than one occasion when defining Argo RB Cory Boyd.

-The last few practices I've noticed the Als implement some trickery, (ex: the KOR end around with Chip Cox vs Sask). Fake field goal, flee flickers and hook and ladders are all in play, apparently.

-Alot of people have been asking about KR\WR #0 Andrew Hawkins, I know our good friend HerbZ from The Gazette is on the case of the dissapearing twitter feed... make sure to read him this week www.alsinsideout.com and www.montrealgazette.com, or just pick up the paper.

-It's back on the road for the Als, they are 2-1 away from PMS.

Post Game Alservations: Down to the Wire

Well that was another doozy of a game. If the Alouettes and Riders meet up again in Edmonton come November I don't think anyone would be disappointed.

On to the Alservations...

-I've said it many times, but it deserves to be said again, Darian is a Superstar in the CFL.

-Coach Miller called Durant a bit off tonight, he was right. Sure he had 445 yards, but the two INTs were on him.

-The Pass interference calls on the Als were iffy at best tonight.

-Wes Cates single handily turned a 4 point game into a 14 point game with his 15 yard penalty at the end of the 2nd quarter.

-Tim Maypray has two MFG (name drop) returns this year against Saskatchewan.

-Anthony Calvillo's finger was still crooked in the post game interviews

-We all love Ben, but this is probably his last season in the CFL for the Hall of famer.

-Watching Jermaine McElveen makes one think Keron who?

-Does anyone know what makes Weston Dressler so good, is it his speed or size?

-2nd and long is still killing the Alouettes Defence, one can only wonder how long bend but don't break philosophy can work, well at least another, its the Argos next week.

-Calvillo had 229 passing yards in the 1st half, 23 in the 2nd.

-If you weren't at the game, it was LOUD on the field during the final series.

Als are back on the road next Saturday in Toronto

Saskatchewan & Durant in for a Rough Ride

I was possibly thinking that this could be the week that the Alouettes finally drop one at Percival Molson Stadium. But then Darian Durant had to throw a wrench into the "possible" plan.

Durant only got on the field once this week and I saw him after he landed in Montreal, he did not sound good or look good. I cannot in my good mind take the Riders.

The Alouettes on their part have played their best two games on the season at home blowing out Hamilton and Toronto, so they have no given me any indication not to take them.

Plus looking at the line-up changes for the Als, Skip Seagreaves is better than Luc Brodeur-Jourdain and even though Brian Bratton is a big loss to the receiving core, all it means is that SJ Green will be on the field more often. That cannot hurt the Als chances.

Two players to key in on early, #4 of the Riders Darian Durant, It's a cool nice evening in Montreal so heat & humidity will not be a factor, but his stomach virus could affect hime come the 2nd, 3rd anf 4th quarters. The other player is #6 of the Montreal Alouettes Avon Cobourne, he"ll want to continue his success of last week early, he'll want his touches.

The Defence will also be better than Week 1, we will not see over 100 points combined.

No Durant No Chance

Only one more sleep until this Weeks CFL Markee Match-up between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Montreal Alouettes. The League's two top Offences will face off at Percival Molson Stadium.

The game may lose some luster if Darian Durant's stomach ailment will prevent him from playing. That is unlikely however. Durant did say today that he felt "a but out of it" but he did just arrive from the airport. He also stated that he will be starting.

It's been real humid in Montreal, it is suppose to cool down after the thundershowers tonight, but if its going to be as muggy as today, that would not be the best situation for a player that has been battling his stomach.

The key will be to watch Durant in the first quarter, see how many times he's hit, rushed and knocked down. For a guy that isn't feeling up to snuff energy lost early could be gone for the game.

If Durant can't complete the game, expect the Als to runaway with it. Ryan Dinwiddie and Cole Berqquist aren't the budding superstars in the CFL that Durant is. I was leaning towards the Riders because i love the way Coach Miller has adjusted to the Als in their last two contests, but with questions surrounding Durant... I'm undecided.

Alouettes have some Popp

So the Alouettes finally decided to announce that Jim Popp will be staying with the club through 2014. It's not really a surprise, Jim Popp has been with the team since 1996 when the Als made their return to Montreal.

In 14 seasons under Popp The Alouettes are 168-88-1, the team has never missed the playoffs, played in 12 East Finals, 7 Grey Cups and won two of them. The numbers pretty much forced the organization to re-sign him at any cost.

It was funny talking to the players today. Because Jim Popp is a great asset for an owner and a team president because he finds ways to fit so much talent under a very small Salary Cap. For the players, you would think he's just the guy that can get talented players at a reasonable price.

Of Course no one expects negativity from any Alouette players when commenting on a member of the organization. So I had to ask Calvillo about Popp The Negotiator.

"When it comes to negotiating, at times it can be a different person, but that's what he does and he's good at that"

I think Calvillo hits the nail on the head. To go along with finding talent anywhere and convincing players to not only come north to Canada but to a province where language "could" be an issue, he gets them sign for salaries that work best for the team.

So it'll be 4 more years Jim Popp steering the Alouettes ship. Stewart already has ideas on what he can do first with the new contract under his belt.

"Probably takes him maybe an hour to get his hair just right in the morning, maybe he can get a trim with this extra money he just got"

I'm sure they have clippers in the locker room.

Going Retro

To somes delight to others dismay, the Montreal Alouettes will be wearing their 1977 uniforms this Friday against Saskatchewan.
I'm a bigger fan of last years retro look, however the '77 colors & triangle will definitely bring back alot of memories for the long time Als fan.

It be interesting if one day they had the players wear the old school pads too, that be some shin splinting football.

Cobourne's Running Trend

Sorry that I missed my post game Alservations following the Als 41-10 victory over Toronto, but there really wasn't much to say. The Als as predicted are a much better team than the Argos.

It was good for Alouette fans to see the Avon Cobourne still has it, not that there was any doubt but its always a positive sign when one of the keys to the Alouettes Offence plays such a dominant role.

28 touches (20 rushes and 8 receptions) tied a career high for Cobourne who in 2008 v Win and 2009 v Ham was able to handle the ball that many times.

However this Friday the Alouettes have the fun task of facing the 4-1 Saskatchewan Roughriders, who topped the Als 54-51 Classic in the 2010 CFL Kick-Off Markee Match-up.

It seems at least against The Roughriders, As Avon Cobourne goes as do the Alouettes.

Since week 3 of 2009 The Alouettes have faced the Roughriders 4 times, with Friday's contest being #5.
In week 3 of 2009, Avon Cobourne ran for 146 yards, the Als won by 33 points.
In week 8 of 2009, Avon Cobourne ran for 101 yards, the Als won by 9 points.
In The Grey Cup of 2009, Avon Cobourne ran for 85 yards, the Als won by 1 point.
In week 1 of 2010, Avon Cobourne ran for 39 yards, the als lost by 3 points.

By golly has Ken Miller figured the secret code to unlocking the Alouettes amazing offence... maybe, just maybe. it is clear over the last year and change Miller has been able to adjust his strategy to improve each time he's faced the Als.

Winning Ways Continue

The Battle for 1st place in the East comes down to Montreal and Toronto in Week 5! Well there's still alot of football left, so a loss to either team is not devastating.

However a win for Toronto could start making believers out of the many skeptics that remain. The Argos will lean heavily on Cory Boyd and he'll have his moments. But look for The Alouettes to force Cleo Lemon to beat them. I'm not sure if he has it in him. Barring a 200yrd game from Jermaine Copeland The Als should be ok Defensively tonight.

On Offence, The Als will want to score early on a very strong defensive core from the Argos, Even when they were horrible in 2009, The Argos Defense still made plays.
You'll see more touchdowns than last week against Hamilton but probably less points from the Als.

ON Special Teams the Als will keep an eye on Chad Owens, He spent Training Camp in Montreal and after losing the returners race to Tim Maypray he was shipped to Toronto. I could see him reaching the endzone.

Blindsided by Bowman

Not only was Kevin Glenn leveled 4 times by the quick #7 John Bowman last week at Percival Molson, But I was a victim of Bowman's quick reaction today on The Tieman Show on The TEAM 990.

"12 sacks not 11, tied for 1st in the league not 2nd" -Stated the current Gibson's Finest Defensive player of the Week.

Information on Bowman's 2009 season was quick on hand in my interview this afternoon. Bowman is a player that knows that at the end of the day it is all about the "W" and plays a a big team game. The 5 year CFL vet quickly credits the rest of his defense for forcing Kevin Glenn into his arms last Thursday. But the fact still remains very few Defensive players can make the plays John Bowman makes.

Bowman At 6'3" 250lbs, has a lightning quick first step, but don't think he can't bowl over a 300lb offensive lineman. Through his first 4 seasons as an Alouette he has progressively gotten better each year from 2 to 7 to 8 to 12 sacks. With 5 under his belt in 4 games of an 18 game season, one can only imagine what the final tally will be in 2010.

He is a player that is also great for us radio folks to interview, never shy of the microphone.

"We say say we don't read the newspapers, but we do, I know what you guys (media) are saying about us" Bowman said on the field after the game against Hamilton on Thursday.

Today he says his coaches encourage him to read the papers and check all the websites. Why would a player do that, well to check for mis-quotes and to see how he is portrayed to the public.

The Als are prepping for the upstart Toronto Argonauts this week on Thursday, both teams are 3-1 and have won 3 in a row. The Als focus will be on Cory Boyd who was the lone bright spot in the Als domination of Toronto in the pre-season. Boyd leads the CFL in rushing and averages 6.5 yrds/carry. Bowman said he was a bit surprised at his power for a running back running into him once in the pre-season.

Expect the two bodies to collide on Thursday again, with an expecting Bowman on the otherside, and if Boyd doesn't get the ball you know Bowman has his sights set on Cleo Lemon.

-Damon Duval missed practice with a stomach virus, possibly the same on that forced Etienne Boulay to miss yesterday's practice. The Montreal Alouettes pulled it through with a convincing 37-14 victory over the Hamilton Ti-Cats. The game wasn't without a few hiccups, including an Als offence that struggled in the Red Zone. Here's tonights Alservations:

-It's becoming pretty effective using #85 Bratton in the run game

-A healthy Dave Stala is a very good player, too bad the Als never got to see that a couple years back

-The Ti-Cats front four were most effective in the Red Zone... in the first half.

-Nice to see #21 Giffin making plays on the Special teams

-you can hear the difference 5000 extra fans make

-#15 Duval's 7 FGs ties his own record he got last year against Toronto, (Terry Baker had 7 FGs in 2000 against Calgary)

-#7 Bowman had 3 sacks & 3 forced fumbles, I know there are 3 games in Week 4, He should win a Gibson's Finest

-#19 Green had 0 catches at half and 2 at the end of the game, it's not enough.

-On the 53 yard MFG at the end of half, The Als had great special teams coverage to limit Thigpen's return. Risking play by Als.

-#13 Calvillo's Knee went numb, that's why he stayed down. Was able to plant his left leg without pain, that's why he returned.

-#13 Calvillo did state that he expects it to be sore this week, look for a couple days off for the reigning MOP.

-#41 Emry is not sure anyone reads his work on www.alsinsideout.com, check it out.

-Coach Trestman says its dissapointing that they had trouble in the Red Zone but is not concerned

-with only 10 points at half I was worried about my 44 point prediction, but in the end I was one Shea Emry Pic 6 away from hitting the mark.

-The Stadium looks good.

Als next play Toronto in Montreal in a week, The Red Zone watch is back on.

Alouettes Will Score

I haven't hid my thoughts on how the Alouettes will play in their 2010 home opener.
All week long on The TEAM 990 I have stated that they will win. I stand by that.

Anthony Calvillo always plays well at home and this group of players have waited patiently for four weeks to pass so that they can play in front of 25 000 plus.

They will be revved up and primed for an offensive outburst. I like a 3-4 TD game for AC, as for the other AC (Avon Cobourne), he'll get his too.

It's a beautiful night in Montreal, 24'C and 0% chance of rain, 15km/h winds. Perfect for well trained offence.

The Als will be in the 40's, the Ti-cats, will get their points, just not enough.

Hungry for Home Cooking

The Alouettes offence is ready to go. They are primed for an outburst. They want to score touchdowns.

After scoring 51 points in a double OT loss in week 1, the Als O has dropped down to 33 points in week 2 and then 16 in week 3. But starting on the season on the road for three straight weeks the Als are coming home with a 2-1 record.

The newly renovated Percival Molson Stadium will allow 5000 more fans to witness the leagues top offence unit work. The Alouettes know how to score at home. They havent hosted a regular season football game since November 1st, and they put up 48 points on Winnipeg. If you want to throw in the East Final, The Als embarassed the Lions by scoring 56 at the Big O. Prior to that, The Als put up 41 against Hamilton at home. This was pretty much the story for the Als at Home in 2009.

If you really think about it the last time the Als lost at home was to the Calgary Stampeders in The 2008 Grey Cup on November 23rd, 2008. The last loss at McGill Stadium a month earlier in a meaningless game aginst Winnipeg 24-23.

The Als, simply put, win at home. The Alouettes offence, simply put, score at home.

Offensively through three weeks the numbers aren't great for the players.
-Avon Cobourne is 8th in rushing, he trails a group that includes Win QB Buck Pierce. The only starting RB he's out rushing is the Ti-cats DeAndra Cobb.
-No receiver on the Als have more than 13 receptions.
-Anthony Calvillo only has 6 TD passes this year, 4 came in week 1.

All that being said with the over-under sitting at 52, take the over. The Als will be having some Home-cooking in their opener.

Post Game Alservations: Flag on the Field

Game two is in the books, and for an Als that is the reigning Grey Cup Champ, there is still alot of work to do.

Very sloppy affair against the Eskimos, however winning on the road is not easy for the Als in Edmonton or BC therefore a win is a win is a win.

-The Als defense is taking too many chances early on in the season, and teams are taking notice by going deep.

-When you tug on a jersey, the refs notice.

-Round of applause for the Campbell and Stamps drops, Als fans better give them a hand, cause the Als D needed the boost.

-Taking chances works sometimes, #39 with a solid INT that changed the pace of the game, that was not pass intereference, he wanted the ball more.

-INTs at the end of the half shouldn't count in stats.

-Als D-line need to pick up their game, at least they get to see Keron Williams next week. Purolator wants more sacks, so does Tim Burke.

-I'm still not worried about #6 Cobourne. He looked good... when he got the ball.

-2nd consecutive game the Als Safety leads in tackles, #22 Boulay looked great, But you rather a LB lead the way.

-Speaking of #22, Great athletic play on his INT.

-Way too many flogs for me to enjoy this game, ugly on all three sides.

-1 rec from #85 Bratton & 0 from #19 SJ is not enough.

-From long week to short week, Als play in BC on friday, I like that Coach Trestman and the gang are staying out west. He gets a great ol' fist pump for that.

Like many young athletes in Montreal, Marc-Olivier Brouillette grew up playing hockey. When he was six years old he started playing football too. And in 1995, Brouillette had to make a decision: football or hockey.

He was faced with the decision when his father got ill and it was became a lot for his mother to drive him and his brother to two sports. The result, Marc-Olivier chose football and his brother chose hockey.

The rest is history. After being drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in the third round of this year’s draft, Brouillette has cracked the roster. Not as a quarterback, the position he’s played exclusively since he was six years, but at linebacker.

“The transition is going well, it’s different as I’m still trying to pick up the technical aspect, getting my body into position to make plays,” said Brouillette. “But in terms of the schemes and playbook it’s going well.”

In terms of his build, the move appears to be a match made in heaven. He’s six-feet, 230 pound and his number one responsibility, when he plays, will be to stop the run.

His path to get to the CFL is a story on its own. Brouillette had the choice; try out for the Alouettes or practice law. Torn between the two, it was actually a lawyer who helped sway him to pursue his dream of playing professional football.

“He told me his biggest regret was declining an invitation to the Junior National Ski team,” said Brouillette. “He said, work isn’t going anywhere, the big law firms aren’t going anywhere, chase your dream and give it all you got. If it doesn’t work out then you can enter the business world later.”

This happened during his second year at the University of Montreal, a time where Brouillette developed relationships that he knows will last a lifetime.

“That class of 2006, the guys grew to become very good friends,” said Brouillette. “We developed a bond at U of M and we were always pushing each other to get better, stronger and faster. That’s something I will always remember and 15 or 20 years down the road, if we run into each other it will be as if we never skipped a beat.”

It was the second game of the pre season against the Toronto Argonauts where Brouillette was able to prove to the coaching staff that he belonged. Now, Brouillette can’t wait to suit up for his hometown team, at Percival Molson Stadium, as a member of the Montreal Alouettes.

“It will be special. Since the Alouettes came back to Montreal, as a young French Canadian it was always about the Als and the Canadiens. Getting a chance to put on the jersey in a regular season situation will be something special and a great accomplishment.”

The long wait between games continues for the Montreal Alouettes after their season opening loss to The Riders. It'll be a third straight day of being off the field for the Als on Tuesday.

Don't think the Als haven't been watching the film of the loss, they have. What will they see?
-Poor Tackling
-loose coverage
-tired bodies
-and some nice tosses by Darian Durant

The Als defense will bounce back. This is pretty much the same group that stymied the CFL last year. The Als were up by 21 points in the 3rd quarter, then they got tired. They still have the skill. However they will have another big test as the Als secondary will have to deal with Ricky Ray. Ray has one of the best arms in the CFL. However the Esks Receiving core is nowhere close to the talent that the Als and Riders have.

The Als Defense will have to move forward for a couple weeks without Diamond Ferri for a couple weeks with a shoulder injury, plus Mark Estelle may not be ready to go with a Hamstring. Look for Ramon Guzman and De'Audra Dix to replace.

Well, what can one say after that thriller of a game.

The CFL is designed to create entertaining football.

So the Als drop a 54-51 2OT decision in the Grey Cup Grudge match to the Riders. A game filled with great offensive plays is a game that has defensive mistakes. Let's take a quick look at game 1 of the Als season.

-Love the way #13 AC bounced back from an interception and sack to start his season. Big numbers 28/42 368 yards and 4TDs. He's still got it.

-#18 Jamel Richardson 5 rec for 79 yards, could have been better. A couple of drops in the hands tonight

-#3 Tim Maypray with the 2nd longest MFG Return in Als history 122 yards for the TD. that's great news for a team that might have started to miss Larry Taylor.

-#19 S.J. Green with the catch of the Season already in OT on the 2-point conversion, you can see what the Jets liked in him. Just keep him out of the backfield on blocking assignments, he miss reads the blitzes.

-The Als Secondary gave up 478 yards and 5 TDs to Darian Durant. 1- They were missing Mark Estelle 2- The Riders probably have the best receiving core the Als will see this year 3-Darian Durant is in the Top 3 QBs in the CFL (see Calvillo and Ray)

-#17 Billy Parker took alot of chances. hit or miss. It was a miss tonight.

-#11 Chip Cox, looked good in coverage and added a sack and a forced fumble

-Not a good sign when your safety leads the team in Tackles (#20 Proulx with 6).

-The Als defensive line, looked gassed in the 3rd and 4th quarter, Trestman may want to work in a bigger rotation for some of his big names on the line.

-I think #85 Brian Bratton will have huge numbers this year.

-Dressler and Durant could have more completions together than Calvillo and Cahoon, this year.

-The Als O-Line will need at least 3 games to gel properly.

-Don't be shocked about Avon Cobourne's 10 carries, He'll get his touches, just not in a Wild West OT Shootout.

-Circle august 6th on your calendar, Riders in Montreal. I know Coach Trestman already has.

-The CFL is fun

-The CFL is smiling ear to ear with this being the game to debut on the NFL Network.

The Alouettes have 10 days to think about this loss, you know coach Trestman will have geared to pick up their 1st win of the season in Edmonton on Sunday july 11th

Canada Kick-Off 2010

The Montreal Alouettes defence of the 2009 Grey Cup Championship begins today with their grudge match against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. What can one expect from the 2010 version of Alouettes?

-Expect a healthy Anthony Calvillo to dominant the Passing Stats again this year.
-Expect a Healthy Avon Cobourne to gain over 1000 yards, Mostly in the 3rd and 4th Quarter when the Als have their big leads.
-Expect less sacks from the D-Line with an older Anwar Stewart & no more Keron Williams
-Expect more sacks from the Linebackers
-Expect more INTS, with Jerald Brown and Billy Parker add another year of experience.
-Expect to be impressed with CB Stanford Samuels
-Expect to see S.J. Green to play a big role in 5 receiver sets.

-Don't expect Anthony Calvillo not to get sacked. The O-Line will need a couple of games to smooth out communication
-Don't expect big returns every kick, Bratton and Maypray are quick, just not Taylor Quick
-Don't expect a .500 record for the home Opener in week 4. The Als will have tough times in Sask and B.C.
-Don't expect a 14 plus win season, the east is better. Toronto's bad, but they are better.

It's going to be a similar but interesting season for the Als, but how will they motivate themselves. They are still clearly the class of the East, but Hamilton is better and Winnipeg is still a huge question mark, but a with direction unlike under Mike Kelly. The Argos have a first step but are still a ways off.

In the West, much like last year it is a crap shoot. The Riders are poised to represent the West once again in the Grey Cup after their disappointing loss. The Eskimos want to make the jump to Cup in their hometown. The Lions picked up some potent free-agents in Williams, Davis Sanchez and Jamal Robertson and the Stamps are hard to put down because they have a guy like Henry Burris at the helm.

Nonetheless here are some fearless predictions:
East
Montreal 12-6

Winnipeg 10-8

West
Saskatchewan 10-8

Key Departures

It’s the last week of June and it’s an exciting time for Alouette fans. Training camp has concluded, the final roster has been released and opening day is just around the corner as the Als prep to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 1^st.

So how do the Als compare to last years team?

The roster is almost identical. Anthony Calvillo will be the quarterback and he’ll be throwing to a core of receivers that’s he’s familiar with.

On the defensive side of the ball, there’s a ton a familiar faces with Mark Estelle, Shea Emry, Diamond Ferri, Chip Cox and Anwar Stewart.

But still there’s some key elements from last year’s team that won’t be back in the quest to repeat as Grey Cup Champions, something that hasn’t been done since the Toronto Argonauts accomplished it back in the mid 90’s.

Larry Taylor: Probably the most popular of the departed Alouettes is Larry Taylor because of his flashy play and his ability to return the ball 120 yards for touchdowns. He leaves the Als to pursue his lifelong dream of playing in the National Football League. And it’s the New York Jets again plucking players of the Alouettes roster; most remember Etienne Boulay two years ago.

It will be tough to replace what Taylor brought to the field.

Taylor, 24, had a league high 788 yards on 89 punt returns, which averaged to 8.9 yards a carry. Two of his returns were for touchdowns. He was also an East Division and CFL all-star.

Big shoes to fill, but a viable option on special teams is Andrew Hawkins.

Yes, he was injured last year; however he plays a style similar to the one of Taylor.

Davis Sanchez: He goes to his hometown BC Lions after requesting a release, a clause that was put into his contract. Sanchez had three stints with the Alouettes and played in 16 games with the Als last season. Sanchez is climbing up in years at 36 years old and his role with the Lions is still to be determined.

Keron Williams: Personally, I’m disappointed to see this guy leave because he’s still a young player. He strikes me as a leader and possesses a ton of speed off the line.

Maybe the fact that he met his future wife (restaurant manager) on an Als road trip to BC factored into his decision to leave.

Bryan Chiu: Lastly, Bryan Chiu’s departure is one that was unexpected. It almost feels like Chiu has always lined up directly in front of Anthony Cavillo. We’ll have to wait and see how AC reacts to getting away from his comfort zone and taking snaps from Paul Lambert.

The Alouettes always do their best to protect their players, within the rules of 1-game, 9-game injury lists and the practice roster has yet to be released.

The Als roster looks eerily similar to the 2009 version. The key players gone off the starting postitons are of course Davis Sanchez(FA-Lions), Keron Williams(FA-Lions), Larry Taylor(NFL) and Bryan Chiu(retirement).

The players replacing them are all going to be in house. Except if you see Tim Maypray returning the opening kick-off on July 1st.

Players of note to look at on the Als Roster, or not on the roster, Adrian McPherson on the 9-game injury list. This could affect the Als short yardage play. Chris Leak will be taking those 1-yard dives but he gives at least 4 inches to McPherson. It was automatic last year, this year it will be something to keep an eye on. As for if AC gets hurt, Leak is more than capable to run the show.

O.J. Santiago on the 1-game list. I'm just really curious on how he'll fit in on the Als roster and who will be sitting out in his place. He's a big body that has hands, but he'd be a new target for AC and I'm curious how that relationship will develop.

No big shockers, Darrell Campbell's performance was underwhelming in the pre-seaosn and he did have the inside track on the DT position left open by Keron Williams. Campbell knew the defensive scheme as he was on the 2009 edition of the Als. Campbell lost over 35 pounds in the off-season to become more useful to the team. However the weight loss, could have lost him some strength when it came to run-defense.

It would have been a nice story if Patrick Cobourne made the squad, however Patrick was in tough to try and crack the Als at the receiver position. Most of the Back-up receivers will be Canadians. This may not be the last we see of the younger Cobourne.

And you got to think the Als had what DB's they wanted on the squad prior to the game against The Argos. Both Chandler and Snowden had INTs in that game and looked solid.

It does seem like the returners position is still up for grabs as Maypray, Owens and Whitaker and still around, for now.

Post Game Alservations: Pre-Season Predictable

Sure it was a pre-season game but there was plenty of eye-catching performances and moments for the good or the bad.

-It's going to be a long season to the Argos

-AC looked good in his two series, in for 11 plays, 8 completions, 1 hand-off. One of his two incompletions was a dropped ball.

-Each of the starting WR got a touch from AC, #81 Watkins, #85 Bratton, #19 Green with 1 catch and #86 Cahoon and #18 Richardson with 2.

-The Battle for Kick/Punt returner was a good one. #4 Owens, #3 Maypray and #2 Whitaker all had some quality returns.

-#3 Maypray may have won the battle because his play at WR, lead the way with 4 receptions and 54 yards and 1 TD.

-#2 Whitaker is in a tough spot because he's a RB and # 6 Cobourne has a lock on that position.

-DB #25 Tanard Davis made a couple of great plays on defense, Two weeks in a row he's impressed. The decision at CB will be tough. I still think it'll go to #35 Dix or #16 Samuels.

-QB #12 Chris Leak could start/star for at least 3 other CFL teams, cool and collected.

-The Als back -up defense had 4 sacks, 3 pics and 2 forced fumbles. They played 60 minutes.

-RB #30 Deidrick had a slight pull of the hamstring in the game.

-The Als O-Line cycled positions throughout the game which made it tough on #5 McPherson and #12 Leak. Expect Brodeur-Jourdain to be at Left guard come July 1st.

- #57 Scott Flory did no play, Congrats to the Flory's and their new baby Girl.

Als are off for a couple of days, and will practice next week for a couple of days at Concordia. Coach Trestman has tough decisions to make for the final roster spots, just don't expect any shock and awe cuts to be made.

Week 2: Training Camp News, Notes

Week 2 is in full swing. The Alouettes today continued to prep for the 2010 season at Bishop's University. Here are todays News, Notes and Observations

-No pads for #0 Andrew Hawkins, #83 OJ Santiago, #25 Tanard Davis, #55 Skip Seagreaves and #91 Shawn Mayne

-seeing #8 Kerry Carter line-up as a Tight-end a couple of times

-Coach Trestman was pumping crowd noise at Coulter Field, Said it was to prep for the 3-game road trip to start the season, and for his defense at home.

-#18 Jamel Richardson, twice took himself out of 1st unit scrimmages, he's either banged up or lazy.

-#3 Tim Maypray got some reps on 1st unite receiver core, as did #80 Eric Deslauriers

-#12 Chris Leak has a great arm, I would think at least half the league would love to have him as thier pivot.

-#94 Darrell Campbell played at 354 lbs last year, reported to camp at 306lbs

-#15 Damon Duval is cheering for the USA at the World Cup but expects Brazil to take the crown

-#14 Patrick Cobourne looks and speaks just like his brother Avon, but minus the flair.

-Just like last year the Als Defense feeds off the energy of #9 Anwar Stewart, he goes 100% in every drill.

-#12 Leak had back to back beautifull plays with #42 Marcus Freeman

-If i had to choose a horse right now on who will be returning kicks on July 1st, I'd go with #4 Chad Owens, Until #0 Hawkins gets healthy.

-If you want to see your favorite Alouettes in the game on Saturday afternoon at 1pm at the refurbished McGill Stadium, don't miss the 1st quarter, they won't be in for long.

Key Time for MacPherson

The news of Anthony Calvillo staying in Montreal for the Pre-season game in Winnipeg is no surprise to anyone. AC will play his 2 plus quarters at home in a week. The start of course goes to #2 man Adrian MacPherson and this is a key start for him.

The Alouettes are a machine that is designed for AC, there's is no question that MacPherson brings different attributes to the table. I also realize that Coach Trestman has plays designed solely for MacPherson and not AC.

But time is very limited for a back-up to Mr. Calvillo. If he's not injured any playing time MacPherson will get will be at the end of a blow-out, where he'll just be handing the ball off to the 3rd string RB.

For MacPherson to prove himself around the league these pre-season starts are important for him. For MacPherson to be ready in any case of injury the pre-season is the only real competition he'll get. It'll probably be the only time he plays in game (besides post playoff clinching) that the score will be within 20.

Look for him to use his legs, they are an asset, plus he won't have the 'A' receiving crew at hand. So don't just look at the box score when it's over. MacPherson knows his place on the depth chart in Montreal but it doesn't mean he won't be strutting his stuff on Sunday in Winnipeg.

Training Camp News, Notes

Well they let me out of studio so I could head take the 2 hour drive to Lennoxville to catch the Als camp today. It was good to see the players and good to see some football being played.

Here are today's News & Notes

-Within the first 10 minutes, #18 Jamel Richardson had three drops, our good friend HerbZ, noted that I just missed one prior to showing up too.

-No #65 Paul Lambert on the field, He was with doctors, he "tweaked" his knee according to Coach Trestman

-With Chiu retired, Lambert MIA and#57 Scott Flory nursing a hamstring injury (he was on the bike today) the future is now for Als OL, #60 Andrew Woodruff RT, #62 Dylan Steenbergen LT and #58 Luc Brodeur-Jourdain C were all taking 1st team reps today.

-# 8 Kerry Carter, #82 Danny Deriveaux and #37 Martin Bedard were not wearing pads today

-#35De'Audra Dix picked off #5 Adrian MacPherson in his bid to claim a starting spot.

-#83 OJ Santiago took reps as a Fullback with Carter out.

-#19 SJ Green made a great one-handed snag along the sidelines, but instant replay may have shown he stepped out of bounds.

-Coach Trestman puts as much pressure on his coaches to perform as his players

-No Competition at the QB or kicker positions, only 3 and 1 in camp.

-As for the Pre-season game in Winnipeg on Sunday. Coach Trestman called it a "Young Man's Game" And there will be alot of Vets not making the trip.

It's All In Their Heads

Big news in the CFL today as they will be moving forward with headsets in the QB's helmets. Another positive step for the CFL as they continue to grow year by year.

It took awhile for the CFL to get HD replay for the referees, however they got it and they got it right. Headsets for the QBs may be years behind the NFL, however it is now in effect.

Coaches will be able to communicate with their QBs up until 10 seconds left on the play clock and the headsets won't be turned back on until the play is whistled dead.

What does this mean for the Alouettes? More offense. This can only benefit a team that is already on the same page offensively. The Als are a team that can run a hurry up offense at ease, meaning coach Trestman will be able to communicate to Calvillo even more knowledge at times of need. The two already have a great relationship this piece of technology can't hurt the potent tandem.

The Headsets are only one-way, meaning the QBs will not be able talkback to their coaches, I'm sure the coaching staffs prefer it that way.

Hole Up the Middle

Congratulations to #68 Bryan Chiu on a great career with the Montreal Alouettes. At the team's physical Chiu came to the decision that his time to call it a career is now.

That career included 13 seasons in a Montreal Alouettes uniform, 7 CFL All-Star Nominations, 9 Eastern All-Star Nominations, 2002 CFL Most Outstanding Lineman award and 2 Grey Cup Championships.

So many props go out to a west coast guy who has made the east coast his home. Going out a champion is not always the easiest thing to do.

However, since being drafted 2nd back in 1996 by the Alouettes, Chiu has been a main stay in the middle of the offensive line. His shoes will not be easy ones to fill.

That hole will most likely be filled by another Alouette veteran, Paul Lambert. Unless the Als decide to look elsewhere for a centre, Lambert is the in-house solution. That creates an opportunity for Luc Brodeur-Jourdain, who filled in for Lambert at the left guard position when he was out with turf-toe last season. Brodeur-Jourdain struggled early but finished strong in his substitution role.

Brodeur-Jourdain's biggest issue last year was communicating with Chiu. The now retired player had been used to Paul Lambert and Scott Flory by his sides for years and there was now almost no need to communicate verbally. They had practically developed a 6th sense having played together for so long.

Look for some early issues as all eyes will be on the center and left guard positions during trainging camp and early in the season. But knowing each play starts at the centre position, Head Coach Marc Trestman will not waste his time finding a proper solution.

Football will be Played

Just yesterday, I wrote here on Missed Field Goal that one of the biggest questions for the Als would be all the off-field questions. Well one has been answered.

The CFL and CFLPA have reached tentative agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The deal has yet to be ratified, but as a CFL veteran put it 'Football will be played this summer'.

This is great news for the CFL and the CFLPA, it just did not make any sense to delay or postpone the 2010 season. Professional football leagues, other than the NFL, are tough to sustain but the CFL has been kicking for a while now and a stoppage would hurt it's future. It's great to see that the owners and players realize how much they need each other to survive.

In the New CBA there will be drug testing. Something that both the players and owners wanted to implement this year. Just adds more credibility to the league. More details will come once the deal will be finalized.

Priming for the 2010 CFL Season

As the Montreal Canadiens distracted the city until yesterday, the Montreal Alouettes brass have been busy preparing for the opening of training camp on June 6th in Sherbrooke.

You can get excited about all the signings like O.J. Santiago and NFL releases like S.J. Green, but if CFL training camps that I have attended are any indication, there are alot of no shows and quick departures.

The fact is the Montreal Alouettes of 2010 will look alot like the Montreal Alouettes of 2009 at least on the offensive side of the ball. The questions about Brian Chiu and Anthony Calvillo were quickly answered and Ben Cahoon's return was always assumed.

Barring any major injuries, the Alouettes offense will be pretty much the same it has always been under Marc Trestman. But training camp could always yield a couple of surprises.

The questions for the Als are mostly off-field.
-Can they sell out a 25,000 seat stadium consistently?
-Can Rob Wetenhall and Larry Smith re-sign GM Jim Popp?
-Will the CFL and CFLPA agree to their CBA in time for Training Camp?

Those will be the topics leading up to June 6th but once that first ball is thrown, caught, kicked, dropped, muffed, tipped or fumbled all the focus will be on The Als quest to repeat as Grey Cup Champs

Radio Program Notes: The TEAM 990

The Rouge Radio Show with myself Jim Beauchamp and 2-time Grey cup Champion Scott Flory will air for the Final time this season on Tuesday at 8pm on The TEAM 990 www.team990.com.

The Als This Week will be another 2 hour extravaganza that will air on Wednesday at 8pm until 10pm. Herb Zurkowsky will join me and we will try and make sense of this past weekend. Plus we will have tons of reaction from the Alouettes Championship parade. We'll let you know the entire slate of guests as the week progresses. For the Als This Week it will also be the last for the CFL season.

Defense Wins Championships

Looking back at the Alouettes improbable Grey Cup victory, there's alot of moments that changed the fortune of the Als.

Was it the 13th man on the field?
Was it Etienne Boulay's fumble recovery?
Was it Jamel Richardson's 3rd down conversion?
Was it Avon Cobourne's Touchdown?
Was it Jerald Brown's interception?
Was it the Riders declining the penalty and accepting the Rouge?

The list goes on and on.
But there are two moments that I really think were the difference in this game for the Alouettes. It was actually two series, two 2 and out series that is.

The Alouettes have been on the losing side of the Grey Cup 5 times this decade and looking back at all of the defensive squads in those games its not comparable to this year's group. Tops in 21 of 25 defensive categories all season, the Als D paced this team to the 15 and 3 record in the regular season.

Even looking back to last years squad, the changes made thier impact yesterday in the Grey Cup. Seven Tackles and an interception for Jerald Brown, 5 tackles and a sack for Chip Cox who is playing Linebacker this year, 4 tackles and an interception for Billy Parker. Then throw in Shea Emry and Ramon Guzman you have 4 more tackles.

Two Series in this game allowed the Alouettes the chance to provide just enough points for the dramatic comeback. The Als defense did what they promised at halftime they went out on the field and made the Riders kick the ball away. The Alouettes came right down the field and scored and it seemed that they got their Swagger back. The second big 2 and out was right after the Als failed their 2 point conversion. Forcing the Riders to kick it again and giving Anthony Calvillo just less than a minute to get the team into Duval's FG Range.

To me these were the moments that played a vital role in the Als victory. The Als offense provided the points however the defense provided the opportunities.

Which ever way you look at it, what ever play you want to circle as the turning point, the ups and downs and lefts and rights of this football game has turned it into an instant classic.
