Radio Program Notes: The TEAM 990

The Rouge Radio Show with myself Jim Beauchamp and 2-time Grey cup Champion Scott Flory will air for the Final time this season on Tuesday at 8pm on The TEAM 990 www.team990.com.

The Als This Week will be another 2 hour extravaganza that will air on Wednesday at 8pm until 10pm. Herb Zurkowsky will join me and we will try and make sense of this past weekend. Plus we will have tons of reaction from the Alouettes Championship parade. We'll let you know the entire slate of guests as the week progresses. For the Als This Week it will also be the last for the CFL season.

Defense Wins Championships

Looking back at the Alouettes improbable Grey Cup victory, there's alot of moments that changed the fortune of the Als.

Was it the 13th man on the field?
Was it Etienne Boulay's fumble recovery?
Was it Jamel Richardson's 3rd down conversion?
Was it Avon Cobourne's Touchdown?
Was it Jerald Brown's interception?
Was it the Riders declining the penalty and accepting the Rouge?

The list goes on and on.
But there are two moments that I really think were the difference in this game for the Alouettes. It was actually two series, two 2 and out series that is.

The Alouettes have been on the losing side of the Grey Cup 5 times this decade and looking back at all of the defensive squads in those games its not comparable to this year's group. Tops in 21 of 25 defensive categories all season, the Als D paced this team to the 15 and 3 record in the regular season.

Even looking back to last years squad, the changes made thier impact yesterday in the Grey Cup. Seven Tackles and an interception for Jerald Brown, 5 tackles and a sack for Chip Cox who is playing Linebacker this year, 4 tackles and an interception for Billy Parker. Then throw in Shea Emry and Ramon Guzman you have 4 more tackles.

Two Series in this game allowed the Alouettes the chance to provide just enough points for the dramatic comeback. The Als defense did what they promised at halftime they went out on the field and made the Riders kick the ball away. The Alouettes came right down the field and scored and it seemed that they got their Swagger back. The second big 2 and out was right after the Als failed their 2 point conversion. Forcing the Riders to kick it again and giving Anthony Calvillo just less than a minute to get the team into Duval's FG Range.

To me these were the moments that played a vital role in the Als victory. The Als offense provided the points however the defense provided the opportunities.

Which ever way you look at it, what ever play you want to circle as the turning point, the ups and downs and lefts and rights of this football game has turned it into an instant classic.

Als 2009 Grey Cup Champions

More post game wrap-up will be coming in tomorrow.

The Als trailed 17-3 at half and came back for the 28-27 victory. The dramatics of the end of the game are so inexplainable you just have to sit back and shake your head in wonderment.

Had a chance to speak with a slew of players in the dressing room. The main concept of the talks were about never giving up and believing in their teammates.

At Halftime, Avon Cobourne and Shea Emry got loud, and in the end the defense promised to get Saskatchewan to go 2 and out and then the offense promised they score after the punt. That's how the Als got the ball rolling.

The Als fly out tomorrow morning from Calgary and will be landing at PET at Approximately 5pm.

The 2009 Grey Cup Champions will hold a parade starting at 11:40am on Wednesday. The parade will start at the corner of Crescent and Ste-Catherine, moving down the city's main thoroughfare until it reaches the brand new Place des Festivals on rue Jeanne-Mance. To conclude the event, the Alouettes' cheerleaders will perform a routine followed by a player presentation with the Grey Cup on an outdoor stage.

My Rouge Radio Show co-host Scott Flory told me he wants all the Als fans to grow their beards for the Parade. OK maybe stubble.

At the Half

The Alouettes are trailing 17-3 to the Riders. The Als Defense has kept the team within two scores. Two big fumbles have been the difference with the first by Anthony Calvillo, which led to the The Riders only TD (Durant to Fantuz) and the second was by Kerry Carter which killed a positive offensive drive by the Als.

Adjustments?
Well the Als need to re-asert themselves on the Riders, they were the best team in the CFL for a reason. When it comes down to pure talent the Als have more.

The first drive of the second half will be huge. The Riders will have the ball, if they score then it'll be a three score game.

For Calvillo, look to Kerry Watkins, 1 catch 2 yards, not enough. Look down field, Only one attempt to go deep and it was a broken play. Or just keep throwing the ball to Cahoon, he's ready to play.

For Special Teams, don't lose focus or should I say re-focus, both All-stars Duval and Taylor look out of sorts in the first half.

On Defence, down by 14 points and with only 3 on the board, they need to take an activate role in producing points. Start ball searching and scratching, the offense needs one big turnover to turn the green tide.

As for the 41 point prediction before the game, if there is a team that can score 38 points in one half then I would guess it's the Als.

Defensively, The Als

Als Finish Season with a Bang

Here's the pre-game prediction. But to make Als fans feel at ease, here's a pic of Damon Duval kicking in warm up from the 51 yard line. It was good and landed 15 yards deep in the end-zone.

Mitch Gallo who has been giving me his Predictions is MIA out in Rimouski. So to fill in our good friend from CTV and The TEAM 990 Mr. Randy Tieman gave me his score as well.

Randy likes the Als 42-23.

I'm on that bandwagon too, as I said on Melnick in the Afternoon on The TEAM 990 on Friday, Als should take this one. 41-28. It'll be closer than Als fans would like and look for a late defensive TD to be the game-breaker.

Throughout the game, I'll be on www.twitter.com/seanrcampbell with game updates and observations

Grey Cup: Keys to the game

A couple of hours prior to Kick-off here in Calgary here are some keys to the game and my view of the field from the press box, pretty sweet.
For the Riders:

-Make contact with Calvillo. It is quite obvious but they need to get to Anthony Calvillo. It's important for the Riders D-line to make him feel uncomfortable.

-Establish long drives. For two reasons, keep the Als offense off the field and to create confidence with Darian Durant.

-Keep Wes Cates involved. Via the run or the pass, he should get more than 10 touches on the day.

For the Als:

-Score early. So they can block out Rider fans. They will be loud and all over the Als offense an early. An early score will cut into the Riders confidence as well.

-Win the Turnover Battle. Another obvious one, however it will be key for the Als Defense to play a big role in a potential Alouette victory.

-Score in redzone. The Als biggest achilles heel this year. putting up field goals instead Touchdowns. Finish off their drives with a bang

Proof Als Fans Exist in Calgary

Although out numbered by a wide margin, the Als fans are making their voices heard, I visited The Als Huddle last night and as you'll see the Alouette fans were in fine form.

Random Grey Cup Week Photos

What a Win Could Mean

If the Alouettes win the Grey Cup on Sunday, what could this mean? Does this mean Anthony Calvillo, Ben Cahoon and Brian Chiu will all retire?

"What better way to go out then on top as a champion."- Chiu told me at practice. Retirement is a huge step in a professional football career, just ask Brett Favre. Or you can ask John Elway about going out on top. Either way it's a tough decision.

Then I asked Brian about how winning could motivate a player to stay for another year or two. You're playing well, you're playing at championship level, the championship feeling is still with you makes that difficult choice even harder.

"The temptation is there to go back and maybe take another run at this thing, you had so much fun winning one, might as well go back for the two-peat."- Brian responded.

The fact of he matter is, the Als loss last year in the Grey Cup could have been a factor for some of these players to return for another shot. If the Als win then that could be the motivating factor for the players to return again for another run.

Best Meal Ever

I ate the most glorious hot dog ever created, I enjoyed it so much that I believe I'll never have one again, if you can understand that.

With my wonderful per diem here in Calgary I was reluctant to Purchase a $6.50 hot dog.

But then I was told it was a Captain Crunch Hot Dog, dressed with Peanut Butter and Jam.

It was a no brainer.

It's Getting Ugly

The Als Playoff Beards are in full effect. Some of them are getting quite straggly. Some players have decided to maintain the chaos. However I do think that Duval, Flory and Cobourne take the cake for unkept facial madness.

Duval did the curtosy beard stoke for quick maintenance before posing.

Flory says his not only feels like velcro, but actually works better than velcro

Avon has started wearing the tight hoody to protect himself form his own beard

65-yard game winning FG possible- Duval

Had a nice chat with Damon Duval today about the wind at MaMahon Stadium, the elements of Canadian weather in late November and how much leg he has if called upon.

Damon said "Games on the line and we have to go for it, 65 yards or less we have a shot". That means the Als could be on their own 53 yard line and line-up for a field goal. I've seen Duval kick in practice, he's not lying.

He also noted that his longest ever in practice was 72 yards at Loyola Campus last year and his longest in a game was back in high school when he kicked a 54-yarder. In the CFL it's tough for a coach to attempt a over 55 yards unless theres no time remaining in the game, because of the high percentage of returns on long Missed Field Goals.

However, the Als know they have a confident Kicker waiting for his turn, if the score does such dictate.

Don't call them Rookies

For both Billy Parker and Jerald Brown, they feel that they have been labeled unfairly. They are CFL rookies, with even Jerald Brown being named the teams rookie of the year nominee. The two defensive backs are 28 years old and have both being playing professional football for some time.

Jim Popp worked his magic once again, as he was able to poach these two gems from the now defunct Arena Football League. Both players have played in the Arena Bowl, both players have tasted championships before...except the Grey Cup. Parker and Brown will both admit they their knowledge of the history of the Grey Cup is limited but feel they know what it means to the Alouettes, even if they havent felt the sour taste of defeat like many of their teammates last year.

If you take a look at all of the starters that played in the Grey Cup last year in Montreal you'll really only find any differences on the defence. Chip Cox is still there, he's just playing Linebacker, Shea Emry is in the mix. But the big change comes Billy Parker and Jerald Brown at the Half-back position. Mark Estelle, Davis Sanchez still hold their spot. Parker and Brown bring a dynamic presence on the defence that they haven't had in years. The two have combined, including in the playoffs for 7 interceptions this season.

The bottom line is that both Parker and Brown came to Montreal to win a championship. They were probably the two biggest unknowns and biggest surprises of the season. They may still be learning about the CFL and the Grey Cup, but when it comes down to it, football is just football and gamebreakers are gamebreakers no matter what size of field you put them on.

Grey Cup Friday in Picture Form

(Right)The day started with a little bit of a walk, get to the Tower. That's about how far I'm staying from all the action.

3 Outta 5 Ain't Bad

The Alouettes were up for 5 of the 6 Gibson Finest player awards tonight at the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary. The Als were able to muster up a pair of repeat winners and one first timer.

Anthony Calvillo was named Most Outstanding player of this past CFL season, Scott Flory, my co-host on The Rouge Radio Show, picked up his second Lineman of the year award and Kick Returner Larry Taylor was awarded special team player of the year.

Ben Cahoon was beat out on Top Canadian by Ricky Foley and Anwar Stewart was edged by Saskatchewan Defensive Lineman John chick for top defensive player of the year.

Calvillo received 44 of 55 votes over Calgary running back Joffrey Reynolds
Flory totaled 37 of 55 to overtake Calgary Tackle Ben Archibald
And Larry Taylor acquired 36 of the 55 to beat out B.C.’s Special teamer Jason Arakgi.

In a tight race Ricky Foley edged Ben Cahoon 31-24 and Anwar Stewart lost 34-21.

The only award without an Alouette involved was the Leagues Most outstanding rookie. B.C. Lions running back Martell Mallet took that honour over Winnipeg DB Johnathan Hefney.

Other Awards handed out on the night:
Marwan Hage picked up the Tom Pate Memorial Award for his work within the Hamilton community.
The Commissioner’s Award went to Wally Buono who became the CFL all-time leader in coaching wins this season.
In the upset of the night, Bomber Doug Brown beat out Weston Dressler in the Reebok Best Move Award. It’s an upset because Brown beat out a Roughrider in a Fan vote.

Media Lunch

Media free for all at the Alouettes Lunch today.

Spoke with Darrell Campbell, Etienne Boulay, Davis Sanchez, Kerry Carter. Most of the guys seemed very happy that they were back on the field practicing instead of a walkthrough. Boulay even told me that he's ready to go today, no need to wait until sunday.

Anthony Calvillo's lunch gets pushed aside so he can answer more of the same questions.

Grey Cup in the House

Not many Left overs, I only had half a plate! They took everything away once I started interviewing.

One Ring Not Enough for Sanchez

Davis Sanchez knows what it’s like to own a Grey Cup ring. In 2005, he won his as a member of the Edmonton Eskimos (who beat the Als). However Sanchez did not touch the field that day. In week 11 of the 2005 season, he went down with a season ending hip-flexor injury. Thus, as Sanchez put it, “I physically own a Grey Cup ring.”

I remember sitting down with Sanchez about 35 minutes after the Als Grey Cup loss last year to Calgary, a very somber Sanchez shook his head and with out making any excuses let me know that “this really hurts.” Sanchez is 0-3 playing in the big game, losing in 2000, 2006 and 2008, he is poised to win a Grey Cup for Montreal. Stating that Montreal is his home and the organization and the fans deserve the Grey Cup this year.

The drive and passion that fuels Sanchez is knowing that he didn’t necessarily earn his ring. The Alouettes were the team that got his pre career started and he’d love nothing more to finish it with them on a high note, just like many of the Als veterans.

Sanchez is the leader of the secondary on the Alouettes, at 35 years old and a veteran of the CFL game. However he was quick to tell me that the “rookies” in the Als Secondary Jerald Brown and Billy Parker have played pro-ball elsewhere and are on the closer to the age of 30 than 25. He knows that he’ll be looked at if things get harry with the Saskatchewan receiving core.

Sanchez had 24 tackles and 2 interceptions this season, nothing near to his career best 48 tackles and 9 INTs that occurred with the Als in 2000, which earned him some time in the NFL. That all being said, Sanchez will be needed when Sunday rolls around for the Grey Cup, and if he gets that “second” ring he’ll know that he played a very key role in the Championship run.

Meet the Roughriders

Grey Cup week has begun and many Alouettes fans are prepping big game on Sunday. The Als will be facing the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the first time in the Cup's 97th appearance. So just like last week as we had Meet the Lions; this week we'll help you set the table for the match-up by learning more about the boys in green.

We'll give you a run down of Saskatchewan's key players that could be factors in this tilt.

This time we'll work it in order of position.

#4 QB Darian Durant: He is a patient man, waiting for his turn at the helm of the Riders offence. This past season Durant proved that he has the ability to be the number one guy. Cool and collected on the field and off the field. He did turn the ball over a little more than he'd like (21 INTs) however that is countered by the 24TD passes in the regular season and the 3 he threw against Calgary last week. He's got legs to create time for his receivers and throws a pretty ball. He has to play well for the Riders to have a chance in this game.

#20 RB Wes Cates: he did not have his best season when it came to numbers however he did miss some time due to injury. His 4.8 yards per carry is well below his 5.4 career average. He is a double threat; very much like Avon Cobourne is relied on for his hands as well as his legs. At the age of Thirty, you know he'll be motivated at his chance at the Grey Cup, because running backs life spans are shorter than most positions.

#6 WR Rob Bagg, #89 SB Chris Getzlaf, #83 SB Andy Fantuz: The great Canadian content rule need not apply for these three receivers, as all three can be the playmaker on any given night. Bagg and Fantuz's numbers are a little higher than Getzlaf's, however Getzlaf had a couple of break out games this year and would love to be the focus of attention come Sunday. The Als defense will have their hands full trying to figure out who Durant's top target will be.

On the defensive Side
#90 DE Stevie Baggs: Very dynamic player that can get to the quarterback in a hurry. His 55 tackles and two forced fumbles are nothing to sneeze at as that proves he is key in the Riders run defense. From a bull rush, to a swim move or spin out, Baggs can take advantage of any Offensive lineman if he's left in a one on one situation.

#97 DE John Chick: His 11 sacks on the season only trailed Baggs by one on the Riders. His power cannot be overlooked on the other side of the D-line. He is the perfect complement to what Baggs brings on the other side. If the Riders have their way Anthony Calvillo will see alot of #90 and #97.

#31 LB Sean Lucas: this is a defensive player that brings the whole package. Look for #31 to be added into the blitz package as he had 4 sacks on the season. He led Saskatchewan in tackles on the season with 81 so he is not shy to get involved in the play.

#15 DB Lance Frazier: picking off 5 passes this year he will be looking for any errant pass from the hands of Anthony Calvillo. He's a tough guy to separate from but if the Als can get a taller receiver on him, that could be the issue as he's only 5'10''.

The problem with the Roughriders is that they do play as a team, and even if these players, possibly excluding Darian Durant, don't play up to snuff the Riders could still come out on top because they have a long list of players that can be game breakers, these are just a few that had strong regular season.

One Game Remains: MFG will be there

Well that was one impressive display by the Alouettes today at the Big O in the East Final. The Als defense set the tone very early in 1st quarter with a forced fumble and an interception that led to Touchdowns. Calvillo played like only AC could with 5 touchdown passes, a pair each for Jamel Richardson and Brian Bratton. In some ways the 56-18 score was flattering.

In the West I will say I was wrong about Darian Durant, He looked good. He played just as I thought Henry Burris was going to play. There will be some disapointed Stampeder fans in Calgary, But the Grey Cup is in good hands cause Rider Nation travels very well.

So with all that Saskatchewan and Montreal will meet in Calgary next Sunday. Stay with MFG all week as I will be in Calgary for Grey Cup Festivities.

Before my departure, tons to talk about on The Rouge Radio Show which will air Tuesday night at 8pm and The Als This Week once again on Wednesday at 8pm always on The TEAM 990. www.team990.com

Grey Cup Repeat...

Always fun to put some predictions prior to kick-off. Just like last week I'll add in TEAM 990's Mitch Gallo's Picks as well.

I like both the East and West finalists from last year meeting again in the Grey Cup.
In the East its too hard not to take the Als, even though the Lions have played the Als very tough this year. Casey Printers definately could be the X Factor, but I believe he'll struggle with communication offence in the noise of the Big O. And Anthony Calvillo will play like AC and the Alouettes will take it 35-25.

Mitch Gallo take: "give me the Als Final Score 30-27. BC can't stop the Al's aerial attck and the special teams will dominate. Printers will play strong but not as strong as AC."

In the West: I look straight at the quarterbacks, Henry Burris vs Darian Durant. Experience vs inexperience. The weapons that Calgary possess are going to be huge factors. Even though the Stamps are on the road, I like what Burris can bring today, it'll be close 25-22 Stamps.

Mitch Gallo's take: "Give me the Stampeders, To Much desire on Calgary's team, they don't want to disappoint their home town fans and not be in the Grey Cup in Calgary. Burris will pick apart the Riders defense and play very similar to how he did on the road in the Grey Cup last year. final 24-17 Calgary."

Well that sucks Mitch and I agree, It'll be a repeat of the Grey Cup last year, expect this year Calgary gets the hometown fans. We'll find out soon enough!

Expectations in the East Final

Sunday's East Final will be in the hands of two knowledgeable football minds. The two Head Coaches in this game Marc Trestman and Wally Buono could make the biggest impact on the end result. Sure Casey Printers is back under the helm for the B.C. Lions and Anthony Calvillo is coming off another MOP candidate season, but Trestman and Buono are definately the masterminds of their chess pieces.

B.C. Lions chess pieces aren't as nice as Montreals however do not underestimate Wally Buono because he knows how to win. As stated on an earlier MFG post, Buono is a 4-time Grey Cup champion and a 3-time CFL coach of the year. Looking at Marc Trestman's CFL career it's a little less distiguished and alot shorter. Trestman was a finalist for Coach of the year last year and watched the Coach Hufnagel grab the grey Cup from him in his first year as a CFL bench boss.

However, you can put all the awards, stats, records and game planning to the side. For both coaches one of their biggest tasks will be to set the mentality of the dressing room heading into kickoff tomorrow at 1pm at the Big O. The B.C. Lions finished the regular season at 8-10, including losing their last three games before defeating the Hamilton Ti-Cats in the Crossover East Semi-final only because the Blue Bombers lost their final regular season game at home. No one likes saying backing into the playoffs, but that is pretty close to a definition. Whereas the Alouettes clinched their playoff spot after week 13.

Expectations can drive a team and can also hamper a team. The East final has two teams on the opposite side of the spectrum when it comes to expectations. This is why it is so important for both coaches to make sure their teams can mentally handle their expectations or lack there of in this years CFL Playoffs. Wally Buono has been head coaching in the CFL since 1990 and Trestman is finishing his second year as a head coach ever let alone in the CFL. So in regards to handling the dressing room you cannot throw away the fact that Buono out experiences Trestman in that regard.

However, players and coaches on the Montreal Alouettes are not looking past the B.C.Lions or Wally Buono. Marc Trestman knows what has to occur prior to even considering to book a flight to Calgary next week.

The first quarter will be the biggest indicator for both coaches to see how the opposition is handling their respective expection level of the East Final. See if one team gets up big early and you'll have your answer. If it's still close, then you know both coaches got the job done.

Cousin Confrontation

Everyone knows #81 of the B.C.Lions, Geroy Simon. But not many people know his cousin, the Alouettes receiver/returner #0, Andrew Hawkins. The eleven year younger Hawkins is just finding his own niche in the CFL, whereas Simon is an all-time top ten receiver.

Simon's numbers say it all; career CFL top ten in receptions (773), receiving yards (12, 547) and TDs (84). Five-time CFL All-Star, six-time western division All-star and the 2006 Most Outstanding Player in the CFL. How do you think Hawkins knew all about the CFL.

Hawkins, on the other hand, has 13 career receptions, 131 receiving yards and 3 TDs in his 7 career games played. Those are numbers that Simon could put up in one game alone. But Hawkins did play in four straight games prior to the teams final contest in Toronto. He missed that one because of injury (ribs) but has been given the green light for Sunday. If he does play it could be an interesting role, as Marc Trestman has certain crossing routes designed specifically for someone with his incredible speed.

I know everyone knows that Simon could be the one making the game-breaking play at any moment as he'll be on the field for the majority of B.C.'s offensive snaps. But don't be shocked if you see #0 out there for the Als in five-receiver sets.

Either way the Simon-Hawkins family members have already booked their tickets to Calgary.

Alouettes Practice Notes 18/11

The Alouettes have started to prepare for the B.C. Lions this week.

On Tuesday the Als held film sessions late into the afternoon and put the pens and paper to work taking notes on their next opponent the B.C. Lions. Casey Printers was item number one on the defenses notebook as he did not face the Alouettes this year.

Today, Wednesday, The Als injury concerns took the field with Andrew Hawkins, Eric Wilson and Diamond Ferri all practicing. TEAM 990's Mitch Gallo was at practice today and was informed by Head Coach Marc Trestman that Andrew Hawkins is good to go and that he's a little more confident in a Eric Wilson return to the line-up than Diamond Ferri. However, it's good news for the Als that they are in the field.

For the B.C.Lions the injury concerns involve Daren Heerspink, Stephen Williams and Martell Mallett. We'll have more on the Lions and thier injuries with Lowell Ullrich from the Vancouver Province tonight at 925pm tonight on The TEAM 990

The Als This week starts at 8pm, it's a 2 hour special and we'll go right until 10pm. Along with Lowell Ullrich, we'll be joined by Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette as per usual at 825pm and Jack Bedell of thescore.com and Montrealalouettes.com at 9pm.

All on the TEAM 990, catch it on your AM dial in the Montreal Metropolitan Area or online at www.team990.com

Rouge Radio Show 17/11 on The TEAM 990

Big show lined up tonight. As the East and West Semi-Finals have wrapped up the Finals are set. We'll look back at Sunday's action and look forward towards November 22nd.

In Studio I'll be joined by my usual Co-hosts #57 of the Montreal Alouettes Scott Flory and Jim Beauchamp head coach of the Western Patriots. Show time is 8pm (eastern) and you can tune in online at www.team990.com.

Jim and I will pepper Scott with questions as the Alouettes begin preparation for the visiting B.C. Lions. We may even have a surprise guest in studio! And we'll be giving away more hats from REEBOK.

For all your CFL and Amateur football needs The Rouge Radio Show only on The TEAM 990

Meet the B.C. Lions

So in the East Final it'll be the Western-most team in the CFL versus the Eastern-most team. The B.C. Lions are coming to Montreal to face the Alouettes this Sunday at the Big O at 1pm (et). The Alouettes only lost three games this year and one was to the B.C. Lions on September 4th 19-12. Yes, I know you remember that game. That was the game the CFL admitted they muffed the call after Avon Cobourne trotted into the end zone, a re-do took place and then Cobourne was stuffed by JoJuan Armour to seal the game for the Lions. The past is the past, so we'll let it be.

It'll be the third time these two teams face each other, but the first since September 13th so it's been 9 weeks. Time for a refresher course on who's who in the Orange and Black.

In Numerical Order,
#1 Casey Printers: he did not play the Montreal Alouettes this season as it was Jarius Jackson getting both starts at the beginning of September. But he will cause problems for the Als with his feet. If the Alouettes are not careful the game will turn out just like last year's Grey Cup with Henry Burris Running rampant and free on the Als defense. Printers arm helps him create big plays as he has the strength to hit part of the field that not many CFL Qbs can. As for Anwar Stewart, Keron Williams and John Bowman, they cannot let Printers get free or he will be able to make time for his receivers. Printers will be priority number one for the Als game planning.

#11 JoJuan Armour: The Mouth of the B.C. defense. Sure he had 62 tackles this year and 4 sacks (3 of those sacks vs Mtl). His main goal will be to get Avon Cobourne off his game. Armour and Cobourne do not like each other and both players are not shy of letting their feelings known. If Armour can make a big play on Cobourne early it could affect his game moving forward, definitely a mtach -up to watch on Sunday.

#35 Martell Mallett: The West Division's nominee for rookie of the year, he picked up 1240 yards on the ground for the Lions for fourth spot in the League. He's dynamic and shifty. Combined with Printers ability to move he'll be a handful for the Als front 7. He protects the ball very well with only 2 fumbles on the season.

#45 Jason Arakgi: This Montrealer is Larry Taylor's opposition for Special Team Player in the League. However he is not a returner, his 35 special team tackles was second best in the league. He'll be looking to make an impact in his Homecoming.

#81 Geroy Simon: In the top ten in every major receiving category this year including receptions, yards and tds. He's an experienced game-breaker that can turn a secondary inside out. It'll be interesting to see who the Alouettes will match-up against him. My money's on rookie Jerald Brown. Who ever it is he'll be getting help over top but Simon's route running and hands could easily beat good tight coverage.

#95 Ricky Foley: The Non-Import is up for Canadian player of the year as he lead the CFL in sacks with 12 to go aloong with his 51 tackles. So he's a lineman that is very effective on the pass and the run. If he can get to Calvillo once or twice in the game he'll make sure AC remembers it. He's quick off the line and very aggressive in his one on one battles.

Head Coach Wally Buono: Well there's not much that can be said about the CFL's all-time winningest coach. I guess you can add 3-time coach of the year and 4-time Grey Cup Champion. The offensive minded Buono knows what it takes to win, even if the Lions did not have a winning record this season, he knows how to motivate and game plan against powerhouse teams like the Alouettes.

So there's a few key Lions to look for this Sunday when the Alouettes host them at the Big O. Any one of them could be a game breaker. The Lions are in a no-lose situation, there's no pressure they needed help to get in the playoffs. However after watching them beat Hamilton on the road none of these players care about that whatsoever, they're coming to Montreal to win.

Divisional Semi-Finals Predictions

Sorry for the lack of posts this week, been travelling with the Montreal Juniors up north on their road trip to Rouyn-Noranda and Val D'Or. I should be back in front of my couch in time for the Eastern Divisional Semi-Final Kick-off. It's going to be a great weekend for Canadian football. So we'll have some fun a post some bold predictions, from myself and my colleague at the TEAM 990 Mitch Gallo on this weekends action.

B.C. At Hamilton: All the pressure is on the Ti-Cats. The B.C. Lions have nothing to lose and that is a scary thought. The Ti-Cats however have been playing some great ball of late and Kevin Glenn looks like like a top 4 QB in the CFL. I like the hamilton in this, mainly because they play a strong game at home and B.C.'s run defense is very porous of late, Hamilton takes it 28-20 over B.C.

Mitch Gallo's view, He's got B.C. 40-26. 40 points are some bold numbers for a QB like Printers who's still trying to find his game.

Edmonton at Calgary: I'm going to be looking at both QBs in this one. Ricky Ray and Henry Burris are #2 and #3 in the league right behind Anthony Calvillo in their ability to dominate the game. So I can see this game going either way. But I like Calgary because they are at home. Both defenses have gone through extreme make-overs over the season and are starting to hit their stride. Calgary in a high scoring affair 42-38.

Mitch Gallo's View, he'll jump on the Stamp's Bandwagon too 30-20 over Edmonton.

So I saw take the home teams, Not so sure I'll go that way next week...

More Than Just Broken Records

The Alouettes were dominant in their 42-17 meaningless tilt against the Argos yesterday. The game was out of hand early enough that 3rd string quarterback Chris Leak got more than 2 series under his belt.

Both Leak and Adrian McPherson played well in place of Anthony Calvillo as they found 10 different receivers on the day, including one to Ben Cahoon to keep his reception streak alive at 127 games. The Als Defense intercepted Argo QB Stephen Reaves 4 times and sacked him 3 times. All in all a relatively routine game for the Als against the Argos.

With the victory the Alouettes set a franchise single season record with 15 wins on the season. Another record in the game went to Damon Duval who had 21 points on the day which allowed him to surpass former Argo's Lance Chomcy single season point record back in 1991. Duval's new record is 242 and is an All-time CFL season high.

However the Als will have to wait for some tests to be conducted on LB Diamond Ferri's right ankle. Ferri who has been battling the flu recently just returned to the line-up the last two weeks. He's a big part of that linebacking core that includes Shea Emry and Chip Cox. The Als have exactly two weeks to get him healthy or find an adequate replacement.

The Als now know they will face the winner between Hamilton and B.C. on November 22nd at the BIG O, The Als want you to know there's only 13000 tickets left you can buy them on www.ticketmaster.ca

News and Notes:

-The best news out of this weekends action for the Alouettes is the fact the Rough Riders clinched first spot in the West. With the Grey Cup in Calgary this year, it takes any possibility that Calgary could be at home for the entire playoff run. The West Division will be won through Riderville this year.

-Congrats to Marcel Bellefeuille and the Ti-Cats who will be hosting their first playoff game since 2001

-The B.C. Lions may have to look to Zac Champion behind centre in Hamilton next Sunday after Both Casey Printers (thumb) and Buck Pierce (shoulder) were injured against Edmonton.

Week 19 Predictions

Since it's a few hours before week 19 Kickoff, Might as well throw some fearless Predictions out on MFG. It's the biggest week of 2009 for 6 of the leagues 8 teams, who's going to step up and who's going to fall down.

Edmonton in B.C. Friday 10:30pm: I like B.C. for two main reasons 1- Edmonton has trouble facing anyone but Toronto the last two months and 2- the Eskimos are battling the flu bug. The losing team can still jump over to the East in the cross-over but I don't think either Wally Buono or Richie Hall will be relying on a Winnipeg loss. Casey Printers may or may not be the answer but he'll give the Lions enough offense to pull out the win. BC 28, Edm 18.

Montreal in Toronto Saturday 1pm: Montreal is going with the B-Team, I agree with it, except for resting Avon Cobourne. I believe Brandon Whittaker will be very effective, so there won't be a lag on the field. But for Cobourne its a long time to rest. McPherson will be hounded by the Argos D but that'll lead to many big run plays. Toronto is still an awful team offensively and the Alouettes won't rest as many on defense as they will on offense. Mtl 25, Tor 20.

Calgary in Saskatchewan Saturday 7pm: A couple of weeks ago these two teams tied in an impressive 44 all draw. Calgary will be very happy with a similar result. Both teams would love the extra time off to rest some bumps and bruises. I'm going to give the edge to Calgary, why? Joffrey Reynolds has been hitting his stride the last three weeks, with two games over 100yards, and the week he didn't hit the century mark he scored two TDs. With the Grey Cup in Calgary it's added motivation for the Stamps not to travel in the playoffs. Cal 38, Sask 35.

Hamilton in Winnipeg Sunday 1pm: If Edmonton and BC tie, then Hamilton knows that they will play again next weekend. However, that shouldn't change any motivation the Ti-Cats would have to win the game and earn a home playoff date against a cross-over team. The Ti-Cats are coming off a win while the Bombers are coming off a tough loss in Montreal. Momentum helps in football. Kevin Glenn looks like a new man since he's been named starter. Ham 27, Win 23.

So I like B.C., Montreal, Calgary and Hamilton. But it is the CFL right so we'll probably see 2 ties and a Toronto win and maybe unfairly the Ti-Cats on the outside looking in with a loss. But that's why we'll all be watching week 19. Enjoy the games.

Should Als A-Team Play Saturday?

Saturday afternoon will be a tough day of decisions for head coach Marc Trestman. How much does he play his A-Team? How Much does he play his most valued possessions: the veterans. The names that stick out when you think veterans and Montreal Alouettes are Anthony Calvillo, Ben Cahoon, Anwar Stewart, Davis Sanchez, Brian Chiu, Scott Flory and Paul Lambert. However you can't forget Avon Cobourne, Chip Cox, John Bowman, all leaders at their positions.

There are four games this weekend and only one has no bearing on any playoff positioning in the CFL, Montreal in Toronto. A game between a team with nothing to lose and another that has nothing to gain. There is nothing for the Alouettes to gain by playing any of their A-Team for more than a quarter. Does Calvillo really need to work on timing with Cahoon? Do Lambert, Flory and Chiu really need to work on their communication between the tackles? Does Bowman really need the sack title? the Answer is no to all questions.

-Calvillo has been in the league long enough that two weeks off can only help not hinder his play, Calvillo showed last week that he's hitting his stride heading into the playoffs, Give him a quarter to give the team a 2 score lead.

-Cahoon went two weeks with only 2 receptions in 2 games against BC in September and still is leading the league in receptions, keep his reception streak going and get him out.

-Watkins and Richardson have both reached their 1000yard marks. Let them play the half, but no crossing routes, keep them away form big hit potential.

-Cobourne is the one I would play, full game. After the bye week and after he was injured and missed the October 12th game against Calgary he struggled for two weeks to get his groove, only running for over fifty yards right after the bye with 93, but 43 of those yards came on one run, which was his longest of the season. Cobourne is a guy that needs his touches he feeds off of them. The goal of the game in Toronto should be to have him touch the ball at least 20 times.

-Offensive line, Rotate in some of the younger guys, but never to the extent that the QB, Calvillo or McPherson is ever in danger.

-Anwar Stewart, Give him the day off, he's earned it.

-John Bowman, Keron Williams, have them start and then start sending the young guys and see what they can do one on one.

-Davis Sanchez, dress him and play him for a half, he missed two weeks ago and could use a little game action, however it's not like Toronto has any threats at the WR position.

-Chip Cox, Rest him, just like Stewart, it's earned by the teams leading tackler.

As far as anyone else, that's up to Trestman and his coaching staff to decide, but the only question to ask after Saturday's game win or lose is: Who's banged up? That'll be your post game press conference. The problem Trestman faces is that he has 42 roster spots not nearly enough for a meaningless game this weekend. The Als are hoping to get shutout on the injury list, that's the only victory to be had.

Playoffs? I'm Talking about Playoffs

It's time to breakdown playoff scenarios in the CFL. Kudos to the CFL schedule maker this year as week 19 should be a dandy with 3 of the 4 match-ups having playoff implications.

So with a quick look, three teams have made the playoffs, one team as been eliminated. Leaving four teams for three playoff spots. And since the cross-over is in play a tie-game may make the difference the best way to break this down is to tell you how the four teams that haven't clinched, could miss out on the playoffs.

Hamilton (8-9) misses the Playoffs if they lose to Winnipeg AND Edmonton and BC Tie.

Winnipeg (7-10) misses the Playoffs if they lose or tie to Hamilton

Edmonton (8-9) misses the Playoffs if they lose to BC AND Winnipeg wins

BC (8-9) misses the Playoffs if they lose to Edmonton AND Winnipeg wins

Good thing the game between Winnipeg and Hamilton is on Sunday after all of Friday and Saturday's action.

Now the interesting thing in all of this is if Edmonton and BC tie, they both make the Playoffs. With Edmonton making the jump to the East in the cross-over to face either Hamilton or Winnipeg on the road.

In the West Division title chase both Saskatchewan and Calgary have clinched a home playoff date. However they face off in Riderville Saturday night with a first round bye on the line. If Saskatchewan wins then Calgary will host the winner of Edmonton and BC in the Division Semi-final on November 15th. If Calgary wins or ties (don't rule it out) Saskatchewan they will have home field for their entire palyoff run.

Montreal, they know their date that's November 22nd at the Big O versus either or the remaining playoff hopefuls (Winnipeg, Hamilton, Edmonton or BC)

Toronto, we'll they can go catch the Leafs at the ACC on Saturday night against the Red Wings.

Two Timing Once Again

For the second week in a row I'll be on the TEAM 990 Airwaves for 2 consecutive hours talking Alouettes and CFL.

First at 8pm The Rouge Radio Show with Montreal Alouette Offensive Lineman #57 Scott Flory and Jim Beauchamp, where we will talk a little amateur football, look at the CIS heading into the playoffs and then welcome our Special guest defensive lineman #94 Darrell Campbell (great name). Jim will put him through his background check and Scott will give him a Flory of Questions. Then the two players will test their CFL knowledge in The Quizz.

At 9pm, It's The Als This Week, where we will look back at the Alouettes revenge match with The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and look forward to the Meaningless game in Toronto on Saturday. We'll be joined by Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette the Authority on the Montreal Alouettes in the City and we'll take a gander around the league as the playoff picture is still a little scrambled.

If your online you can catch it at www.team990.com or in the Metropolitan Montreal Area at 990 on your AM dial

AC Cools Down Bombers

The Montreal Alouettes put to rest any idea that they were in a slump. The Als disposed of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 48-13 during the second leg of their home and home. The Als also improve their record to a perfect 9-0 at Percival Molson Stadium for the 2009 season. Only one more home date remains and that will be the East Final on November 22nd at the Big O.

On to the game at hand, this game was never in doubt. Actually I guess after Larry Taylor fumbled the opening kick-off, there was a smidgen of doubt but it did not last long. Taylor used his flub to propel him to an incredible game which included 7 punt returns for 73 yards, 5 kickoff returns for 147 yards, oh yeah and 1 MISSED FIELD GOAL for 115 yards and a touchdown. All in all 13 touches for 335 yards. He will be your special teams Player of the week in the CFL. Taylor said after the game that he wanted to be a player that made a difference on the team and this week he set up Anthony Calvillo and his offence on numerous short fields.

Calvillo returned to the helm of the offense that was run by Adrian Mcpherson for the past 5 plus quarters. Calvillo did not miss a beat by going 27/38 for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns. As much as this teams players and coaching staff will say that they have the upmost confidence in McPherson behind centre in the absence of Calvillo, this offense is a different beast with Calvillo running the show. From snap counts , to checkdowns, to pocket presence Calvillo has something that McPherson doesn't have and that's the experience. After the game Avon Cobourne felt that comparing the two is just not fair because Calvillo is a sure fire hall of famer and McPherson has only played two seasons. Not that McPherson couldn't have gotten the job done against Winnipeg on this day, because for one thing Montreal's defense finally woke up which stalemated the Blue Bombers attack.

Only one touchdown against, which came on the first play from scrimmage of the second half, a 65 yard TD pass from Michael Bishop to Titus Ryan. Other than that one play Bishop struggled going 7/20 for 80 yards. Fred Reid was held to only 37 yards. The Montreal defense that Als fans have been seeing all year finally showed up. The Als welcomed back Shea Emry, Diamond Ferri and Davis Sanchez back into the line-up and it showed. Both Ferri and Sanchez felt it was tough to watch from the sidelines and wanted to get back in and make a difference.

Only one more meaningless game left for the Als, next Saturday against the already eliminated Toronto Argonauts. However with Winnipeg's loss the playoff picture just got that more interesting in the CFL, we'll tackle playoff scenerio's tomorrow.

Als at Home Safe Bet

Beautiful day once again for Larry Smith and his Alouettes. looking at 9,C with some cloud, Wow the forecast was on the mark. Minimal wind, nothing that should affect the passing or kicking game.

Als get back AC, Sanchez, Emry and Ferri which will make the difference. With Hamilton winning yesterday puts more pressure on Winnipeg. However, their game against Hamilton next week is a bigger priority.

I think the Als Wideouts will find more room at home and with AC at the helm. Defence does need to pick up their game, Keep Winnipeg under 25 points and the Als should be fine.

Als 35-Blue Bombers 22.

All in good fun. For in Game updates head to twitter at www.twitter.com/seanrcampbell

Als Look to Run the Table

Sitting at 8-0 on the Season At Percival Molson Stadium the Montreal Alouettes will attempt to go 9-0 at home this Sunday vs the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Kickoff is at 1pm). The Als are however coming off their third loss of the season to the same Blue Bombers team last week 41-24.

Alot of talk heading into this rematch game will be about the return of Anthony Calvillo into the line-up. Adrian McPherson will return to his second string duties. However the focus should squarely be on the defense. Who over the last two weeks have given up 79 points and hasn't registered a sack on the QB.

But good news for the Als Defense corps, Davis Sanchez, Shea Emry and Diamond Ferri should all be back in their usual positions. The defensive line will need to get to Michael Bishop for the rest of the defense to be effective. The DL hasn't had a slump like this all year. Look for a big game from their veteran Lineman Anwar Stewart who should apply some pressure. JOhn Bowman and Keron Williams will ahve to step up their game with Eric Wilson out of the Line-up and Jermain McElveen banged up.

Should Be a Nice day for the game forecast says 9'C and partly cloudy.

Flu for Chiu

Brian Chiu missed Thursday's Practice because of flu- like Symptoms. Normally not big news in the world of sport as everyone gets sick, even Athletes at some point. However in the world of the H1N1 Virus aka the Swine Flu it affects teams preparations and rosters.

In the past a player would would be isolated, within the locker room, on the bus but would still practice minimally and play. The Player would still be part of the game-time planning. But you see it more and more that players will be asked to stay at home for up to 3 or 4 days. You're seeing alot of this in the NHL as we speak.

Football is a sport where preparation is everything. You can almost guarantee if Chiu misses Friday's practice and Saturday's walk through that he wouldn't play. Even for a seasoned veteran like Brian Chiu it's not worth the risk after missing the week of game planning.

However with only 2 regular season games remaining, this is probably a very smart move on Coach Trestman's part. Especially if you consider how close Chiu and Anthony Calvillo work together. We'll see where he is tomorrow.

Great read on Trestman

CBSsports.com's Clark Judge writes a great piece on Alouette's Head Coach Marc Trestman not getting a fair shake in the NFL.

The Santos Factor

When Ricky Santos was traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, I had to think about it for a second or two. Why would the Blue Bombers trade two roster players for one of the Alouettes non-Roster Practice players? Yes I do understand, The Bombers QB situation at the time was a tad uneasy however it did make me think there was a little more to this trade than just the players involved.

The Alouettes acquired Riall Johnson and Shawn Mayne on September 21st for Santos. Both those players have dressed for the Als since and Santos never got that chance other than exhibition games. I think Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly saw an extra edge he could gain by adding Santos to his roster.

Ricky Santos practiced with the Als for the last year and a half under Marc Trestman. Santos has had first hand knowledge on how Coach Trestman wants his quarterbacks to play. Did it seem odd that The Winnipeg Blue Bombers seemed to read Adrian McPherson on most plays, I think so. I'm sure Mr Santos and Mr. Kelly have had a few conversations over the past few weeks in preparation for the home and home that the two teams are in the midst of.

I'm not saying that there's ill will but surely no one could have missed the extra sauce on the touchdown spike Santos had on his 1 yard plunge. He ran with something to prove for a 3rd string QB accumulating 20 yards on 5 carries all on sneaks.

Talking to Anothony Calvillo about it, he said that the play names have stayed the same, even though Santops is on the other side. Well a 41-24 loss to a division rival could easily change that.

Bombers Issue the Alouettes their 3rd Loss

So The Montreal Alouettes fall to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for their third loss of the season. Not a big deal. This loss will help the Als in the long run, it keeps a team level when your stuck in the rut of always coming out on the winning end. It'll help the coaching staff look at issues that need to be addressed. Thoses issues:
-Adrian McPherson still needs fine tuning into the CFL Game
-The Secondary is capable of letting up big yards
-The defensive line looks tired

Let's Start with the big story of the game; Anthony Calvillo doesn't play, is relagated to the third string quarterback and Adrian McPherson gets his first CFL start. Let's say that again, first CFL start. Sure McPherson has been with the Als for the last two seasons but his playing time has been very minimal, his snaps in practice have been next to none with the first team, so yes there are going to be growing pains. However there is no doubt what kind of raw football talent the Florida native has.

Getting into the game, McPherson lacked pocket presence, holding his ground in the pocket a little too long on some occasions. Where you'd see Calvillo take a step forward to the left or right to give himself an extra half second to let the play develop, you did not see that with McPherson. Chalk that one up to experience. The offensive line didn't help, however it is a different style of quarterback behind center than they are used to and that means that pushing a defender to the outside or inside makes all the difference. In addition to all that, The Blue Bombers defense caused problems all day by playing it smart, by not allowing a young QB any time to read the defense, something Anthony Calvillo can do blindfolded and his shoelaces untied. So yes the Als probably should be concerned if something happens to Calvillo this season, but him tweaking his calf a month prior to the next game of substance is a blessing in disguise, Adrian McPherson can learn and move forward from the loss, which will teach him more than a 35-0 drubbing would have.

On the defensive side, over the last two games there is a little cause for panic. The last two starting QBs, Kevin Glenn and Michael Bishop, have thrown for a combined 917 yards. That is one ugly number. However it is the CFL and the Als defense were putting up record numbers for points allowed prior to the last two games. I suppose percentages state that the Als were due for a couple of poor performances. No Davis Sanchez in the line up and after watching D'Audra Dix get burned on the very first play for Winnipeg yesterday, it seems that Sanchez is as much as a priority for the Als to get healthy as Calvillo. Billy Parker who has been a stud defensively all season long along with Jerald Brown, probably the two biggest surprises all year, has had a tough couple of games, even though he's been paired up against the oppositions top receivers. It's a trend I don't see continuing next week. Parker has tons off one on one expertise and in the CFL if you give the QB time to throw he'll get you no matter how good you are. That's where the defensive line comes in.

Thirty-eight sacks through 14 games, impressive for the Alouettes, 38 sacks through 16 games, a tad worrisome. It indicates that the Defensive line is tired and it did not help yesterday that Eric Wilson went down in the first half with a knee injury. It gives the DL one less guy to work through the rotation. However the Als have just given a ton of confidence to two QBs that they may face in the East Final. Michael Bishop hasn't looked as good as he did yesterday in a long, long time. Sure the Bombers kept their backs in to help block on most plays, but it seems that with the early success of the Als defensive line that they have given up on blitzing. They will rely on the individual skill of Keron Williams, Anwar Stewart and John Bowman. I felt that the moment Wilson goes down you gotta bring the linebackers. However the Als could have been hesitant because of the injuries to Diamond Ferri and Shea Emry, who did not play.

These are a few issues that should concern the Alouettes however it is not all bad. They remain at 13-3, Anthony Calvillo expects to play in the rematch against Winnipeg and it's back at Percival Molson Stadium where the Als are 8-0 on the season. Oh and they get to scrimmage against the Argos on Nov 7th in a meaningless game prior to the East Final. All the loss proves is that the Als are indeed a regular football team, coming back to earth for a quick wake up call prior to the playoffs absolutely hurt no one.

Als Blogging Begins

I guess it’s about time I start writing about the Montreal Alouettes instead of just yaking about them on the air. So let me be clear I’m a talking not a writer.

It’s a good time to take a look at the Alouettes as they have just dropped their 3rd of the season in an ugly fashion against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Als are the front runner for the Grey Cup in Calgary as no one in the West has really taken hold of that division and may just beat themselves up prior to November 29th.

The Als main concern right now is that they are giving some confidence to a couple of their potential opponents in the East Final with a slim 41-38 over Hamilton and the 41-24 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers over the last two weeks. The Als are dealing with some injuries on defense (Davis Sanchez, Shea Emry, Diamond Ferri) and of course Anthony Calvillo on the offence. Excuses, Sure. The players will say no but I have no problem saying the Als aren’t the same team with AC in the line-up.

I’ll get to the loss against Winnipeg later on tonight but I will say only positive things can come from it. Losing a game without your starting QB that doesn’t matter in the league Standings a month prior to your next meaningful game. You think if the Als fall in the East Final that the issue will be the Loss in Winnipeg on October 24th? No, me neither. It’s a non- issue. Even though there are issues to be addressed looking at the last two games.

We’ll tackle those issues in the Game Wrap-up
